Interns spend approximately 12 weeks working alongside leading experts in government and academia from all over the world. Brookings also offers students the opportunity to intern in departments such as communications, human resources and central operations management. The mission of the Internship Program is to provide students with a pre-professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work experience related to their field of study or career interest. Students engage in career exploration and development as well as learn new skills.

Interns will have the opportunity to attend meetings, think tank events, professional development workshops, and public Brookings events.  In addition, interns will have the opportunity to network with other interns throughout the Institution.

This internship is an opportunity for undergraduate students in their senior year and graduate students with an interest in international development, specifically the intersection of technology and the future of work, to apply skills learned in the classroom in a professional environment. This internship pays an hourly rate of $18.00, and applicants must be willing to commit to a minimum number of hours per week (no less than 20 hours per week, during regular business hours), with some flexibility around an academic course schedule.

Position Location This is a hybrid opportunity. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC, office with the option of remote work. Remote work applicants may not work from the following states Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Michigan, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington. Please only apply if you can live and work in states other than those listed above for the duration of the internship.

The Global Economy and Development (“Global”) program at Brookings aims to shape the policy debate to improve global economic cooperation and fight global poverty and sources of social stress. The internship will take place with the Workforce of the Future initiative in its mission to improve access to good jobs in labor markets worldwide, particularly for low- and medium-skilled workers more vulnerable to information asymmetries and rapid technological change. The focus of the internship will largely be quantitative research focused on promoting the use of learning and employment records (LER) to facilitate access to quality jobs based on non-degree credentials, an agenda that includes i) the design of a benchmark for employment records benchmark, ii) the calibration and evaluation of an AI-driven matching tool to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers; iii) the statistical testing if the impact of different types of non-degree credentials on labor outcomes.

The intern will gain exposure to a broad set of applied education and labor market research and policy topics while developing their analytical and quantitative skills managing large data sets. Applicants should expect a range of responsibilities, broadly defined under the following categories

Quantitative Research Perform advanced, complex quantitative data analysis of large datasets and trends, utilizing econometric, network science and other statistical methods. Create and manage large datasets using R, Python, or Stata; write code in to operationalize analysis methodologies. Create tables, graphs, and other data visualizations that clearly communicate research findings.

General Research and Writing The intern may conduct background research and contribute to writing including reports and blog posts on topics related to LER and the impact of education on labor across the globe.

Project Coordination The intern may engage in organizing and inputting data into databases, supporting presentations, and providing coordination support where needed in relation to in-country research labs and global communities of practice.

Events and Convenings Responsibilities will include supporting preparations for and execution of in-person and virtual events, meetings, and convenings. The intern may also have the opportunity to author post-event summary blogs with input from Brooking's scholars and staff.

Education/Knowledge/Skills

Data-oriented undergraduate students in their senior year and graduate students pursuing a masters degree with an interest in international development, and technology and the future of work to apply what they learned in the classroom in a professional environment and in the context of real-life projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in data analytics, econometric techniques, applied research, and an interest in engaging with policymakers. Proven expertise in economic/statistical software such as R, Stata, Python, required.

Successful completion of a background investigation is required for interning at Brookings.
