Job Summary
The Brookwood Community is looking for a Design Artist for the Design/Production department. An artist in the Design Department will develop products with the Citizens in mind, ensuring they can be an integral part of the production process. This in turn, fulfills Brookwood’s Vision while generating revenue to support Brookwood programs. The design/production process is a team effort. A successful candidate must be able to interact effectively with others, be flexible, be responsible and contribute as a team. They must also be willing to take on responsibilities and assist in shared workloads. This position involves designing and creating artistic designs to meet retail needs using a variety of mediums, with a high emphasis on ceramics to achieve artistic or decorative effects. Creativity, communication, and problem-solving skills are important, as is familiarity of computer graphics and design software. Specific work elements include designing products for ceramics, stonecast, greeting cards, and custom orders as requested.
Duties
- Brainstorm with team to produce innovative ideas and Citizen-friendly items for Brookwood production.
- Bring design team ideas to life using various techniques, mediums, tools etc.
- Create process forms, also known as Standard Operating Procedures, for new products.
- Teach shop supervisors all necessary details about each item and any potential issues that may arise, along with the troubleshooting techniques.
- Ensure the Epilog machine is continually running. In collaboration with the coordinator, ensure the shops have all necessary pieces they need before starting each fiscal year quarter.
- Load and unload kiln.
- Operate and maintain kilns for firing ceramics at appropriate temperatures.
- Draw Sketches and create protypes to plan out designs before starting production.
- Prepare market and sell through galleries, online platforms, or craft fairs.
- Experiment with different clay bodies and glazes to develop new techniques and finishes.
- Work with design team to execute special and corporate orders in a timely manner. This involves constant communication with customers to ensure that specialty items meet customers’ expectations.
- Maintain equipment tools and supplies.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Ceramics Artist.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating artistic skill and creativity.
- Knowledge of various ceramics techniques, including hand-building, wheel-throwing, and slip-casting.
- Ability to operate kilns and other ceramics tools.
- Good eye for detail and design.
- Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- A degree in Fine Arts, Ceramics, or a related field is preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.00 - $19.00 per hour
