The Garden Goods Material handler is responsible for performing tasks including organizing, moving and loading plants and plant material and assisting both internal and external customers thereby assuring exceptional customer service. This position operates equipment such as trucks, forklift, bobcat and/or pallet jack to effective move, load and unload materials and plants.
- Customer Service: Provide exceptional customer service to Retail Garden Center customers.
- Support for Greenery & Nursery Staff: Assist with the movement and organization of plant material, trees, and shrubs to support nursery operations.
- Green Goods Area Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked green goods area, including picking up and straightening rows of plants and adjusting signage placement as needed.
- Material Handling: Tag and pull sold materials to designated holding areas.
- General Cleanliness: Perform sweeping and general cleaning of green goods walkways and landscape material areas.
- Loading & Unloading: Load and unload materials and supplies, frequently lifting over 50 pounds.
- Plant Care: Ensure the health and longevity of plants through proper watering and pruning.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate trucks, chainsaws, forklifts, bobcats, and pallet jacks as required.
- Receiving & Stocking: Assist with unloading and stocking green goods from deliveries and ensuring proper organization.
- Order Fulfillment: Ensure timely pulling of tagged products for delivery and installation orders, while securing necessary paperwork.
- Winter Support: Participate in snow removal operations, including shoveling, salting, and using snow blowers or other equipment as needed.
- Delivery Services: May operate a company vehicle to deliver products and materials to customers.
- Workplace Organization: Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment at all times.
- Product Knowledge: Develop familiarity with products and materials sold through the retail garden center.
- Company Image & Standards: Uphold a professional company image that encourages repeat business from customers.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all company safety policies and procedures to ensure a secure work environment.
- Indoor/Outdoor: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.
- Physical Rquiremts: Must be able to stands and walks for long periods of time throughout the day
- Weather Exposure: May involve exposure to inclement weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, or cold.
- Noise Levels: Moderate noise environment; hearing protection is required during certain tasks.
- Position Type: Full-time Seasonal
- Typical Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00am–6:00 pm.
- Weekend Work: Must be available to work at least two weekends per month (generally alternating Saturdays and Sundays).
- Overtime: Occasional overtime as workload dictates.
- Retail Experience: Previous retail experience is preferred.
- Horticulture Knowledge: General knowledge of plants, plant care, and gardening practices or a willingness to learn.
- Operating Knowledge: Previous equipment operating experience (forklift, pallet jack, bobcat, etc.) or the ability to learn is required.
- Communication: Must be able to communicate effectively in English
- Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and interpersonal skills to manage tasks efficiently.
