Upper School Computing, Engineering, and Design, and Robotics Faculty (Seattle, WA)                 

Full Time (1.0 FTE, 3 sections of Computing, Engineering, and Design and leading the Robotics Team) Salary/Exempt

The Bush School is in search of an individual to join our Upper School team as an Upper School Computing, Engineering, and Design, and Robotics Faculty member. We are seeking a candidate who is able to support the school’s mission of diversity and inclusion and who has a background that demonstrates an understanding and appreciation of intercultural fluency.  We are building a team in which diversity of experiences, backgrounds, and talents are valued in order to work with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff and families. The Upper School Computing, Engineering, and Design, and Robotics Faculty member reports to the Upper School Director and works closely with students and families, as well as Upper School Faculty and Staff. This position will be responsible for teaching three sections of Computing, Engineering, and Design and leading the Robotics team, in addition to hosting a student advisory group and teaching in our three-week experiential program (Cascade)

While other duties may be assigned, a qualified candidate will be able to manage the key responsibilities and tasks listed below:

  • Create and sustain a positive classroom culture, based on the mission and values of the school
  • Employ developmentally appropriate teaching methods, materials, and workload expectations for upper school students  
  • Maintain knowledge of current and emerging content in the fields of Computing, Engineering, and Design and Robotics (students compete in the Vex Robotics competitions)
  • Enhance curriculum and student engagement with relevant lessons, guided practice and age-appropriate technologies
  • Adapt instructional methods and differentiate for neurodiverse students in collaboration with learning support colleagues
  • Possess the interest, ability, and skills to successfully teach Computing, Engineering, and Design to Upper School students  
  • Serve as an advisor to a group of ten Upper School students, monitoring their overall well-being and serving as the primary point of contact for their parents
  • Value and incorporate diverse perspectives in daily interactions and within the curriculum
  • Develop a culturally responsive, student-centered classroom community that fosters engagement, inquiry, risk-taking and confidence
  • Establish classroom expectations that create a safe and comfortable environment for all students
  • Create and sustain effective family partnerships, for example: communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress and classroom news via formal fall/spring conferences, written communications, and school portal
  • Observe/evaluate/assess students’ development and maintain accurate records regarding student progress and areas of growth
  • Attend and chaperone school related events outside the scheduled school day
  • Communicate openly, timely, and supportively with students, staff, parents, and other stakeholders regarding student achievement and progress
  • Participate actively and with curiosity in school/division/department/committee meetings on Wednesdays until 5:15 pm, as well as student community gatherings during the school day
  • Work with departmental peers to develop K-12 scope and sequence for emerging technical skills within a department that is still fairly new
  • Collaborate with school counselors and learning specialists to plan lessons, curriculum, materials, and resources to effectively serve students with different learning profiles and mental health needs  
  • Utilize technology to support student success (e.g. Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, learning management systems, etc.)
  • Conscientiously complete other duties as assigned 

Experience and Professional Competencies:

  • Experience teaching computer science is required, with 3 or more years preferred
  • Knowledge of multiple coding languages and development platforms, such as Java, Google Collab or GitHub is required
  • Experience teaching computer science to Upper School students is preferred
  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science or computer science-related field is preferred
  • A demonstrated commitment to professional development and growth in this area is required

  • A commitment to completing work in a timely and thorough manner while being conscientious about assignments and deadlines
  • Have proficient skills in the use of technology, including, but not limited to Mac or Windows OS, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and relevant cloud-based tools

Additional Requirements:

  • Have a current Adult and Children CPR, First Aid and AED Certification (or receive one soon after hire date)
  • Meet the school’s standards when completing two separate background screenings

Compensation/Benefit Information for this position:

  • Salary Range: $57,120 - $103,750
  • Faculty employees with a Master’s degree, PhD and/or National Certification may be eligible for additional compensation
