The Staff Writer position with The Business News is responsible for reporting on stories relevant to the business communities of Northeast, North Central, and West Central Wisconsin. We are looking for qualified storytellers who share a passion for elevating the discourse surrounding business and business-related topics within our community. Candidates for this position should be driven, principled, and forward-thinking with knowledge of topics and trends within the business communities of Northeast, North Central and West Central Wisconsin and beyond. The Staff Writer position reports directly to the Editor of The Business News. The Staff Writer role is a full-time, salaried position, with benefits (health and dental insurance).
Role Responsibilities
- Represent The Business News’s brand and interests publicly in the communities of Northeast, North Central, and West Central Wisconsin and do so authentically and in alignment with organizational principles and values.
- Establish and cultivate a wide network of contacts and sources within the Northeast, North Central and West Central Wisconsin business community and surrounding communities for future stories and research.
- Research, pitch and produce original and compelling stories of different sizes and scales that can be published across multiple types of media.
- Forecast topics and conduct research to uncover emerging news stories relevant to the business communities of Northeast, North Central, and West Central Wisconsin.
- Receive assignments and tips for stories and perform the necessary research to assess viability and bring stories to fruition.
- Leverage first-hand information, interviews, data, and additional research to obtain necessary information and background to craft and corroborate a story.
- Maintain necessary records for stories, including interviews, notes and recordings. All interviews must be recorded.
- Adhere to journalistic code of ethics and ensure that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity, as well as quality.
- Craft well-written, thought-provoking articles with an awareness of audience and readership.
- Report stories across multiple platforms, including print, digital, and social media.
- Proof stories for each edition of The Business News, as well as affiliated publications.
- Stay up to date on developments with the Northeast, North Central, and West Central Wisconsin business community and beyond.

The Business News is a news publication that covers the latest news, updates, and topics relevant to the business communities of Northeast, North Central, and West Central Wisconsin. In doing so, we seek to bring voice to and from the business community to create and further discussion around subjects in business and related fields.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, a related field, or a combination of education and experience
- Excellent communication, networking, and interpersonal skills
- At least two years experience in journalism or media-related communications field
- Writing portfolio that includes at least two samples of writing
- Experience in setting the scope for research projects and following through to execution
- Knowledge of AP style
- Proofing experience preferred
- Have some knowledge of the Northeast, North Central, and West Central Wisconsin business communities
Skills/Abilities
- Proven working experience as a journalist, reporter or media-centered writer
- Portfolio of published articles
- Strong observation and deduction skills
- Ability to conduct interviews and research and corroborate data
- Ability to adhere to strict deadlines and fast-check information
- Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities simultaneously, including balancing multiple stories per issue
- Proficiency in leveraging digital tools, including Microsoft Suite, CRM tools, Google Docs, and various social media platforms
- Ability to navigate a fast-paced, quickly changing environment
Salary : $45,000 - $55,000
