Job Summary: Prepares animal diets, delivers feed and maintains commissary and diet preparation equipment by performing the following duties:
Job Duties/Responsibilities: include the following, other duties may be assigned.
- Prepares animal diets according to approved diet requests and recipes, and checks quality of ingredients as well as accuracy of preparation, storage and delivery.
- Cleans and disinfects commissary facilities and all equipment and tools associated with diet preparation and delivery, and inventory maintenance.
- Checks facility and equipment cleanliness and maintenance and reports maintenance needs to Commissary Manager.
- Participates in interactive educational programs and responds to questions from zoo visitors in a helpful, friendly, courteous and informative way and makes efforts to make visitors experience a positive one.
- Rotates ingredients stock for use in preparation.
- Identifies and remedies safety hazards.
- Checks in produce orders.
- Assists in training new technicians.
Job Qualifications:
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Food Preparation experience preferred
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routing reports.
- Ability to speak effectively to visitors or employees of the Zoo.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and perform various units of measure conversions.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry instructions and/or effectively and safely apply procedures, rules, and policies to performance of duties.
Computer Skills:
- Ability to generate diet report from Zootrition Software.
Physical Demands:
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to manipulate, chop, slice, and/or dice diet ingredient items. The employee is frequently required to bend and walk, and to lift and/or push or pull up to 60 pounds. This position occasionally requires driving vehicles and unloading trucks. Hearing and vision are necessary for safety performing the duties of this job. Employees are occasionally required to stack hay bales weighing in excess of 80 pounds.
Equipment Operation:
- Ability to operate digital scales, knives, electric meat grinders, bone saws, blenders, food processors, and dish washers.
Work Environment:
- The work environment in extreme temperatures indoors and outdoors. Requires work in changing weather conditions including heat, humidity, cold, rain, wind, and snow. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to low. In some cases, employees are exposed to foul odors, and/or dust.
