Position: Middle School Academic Tutor
Location: The Calverton School, Huntingtown, MD 20639
Reports To: MS/US Division Head
Position Overview:
Calverton School is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and dynamic Middle School Academic Tutor to join our team. The ideal candidate will be committed to helping students succeed academically and develop strong study habits, critical thinking skills, and a passion for learning. The tutor will work one-on-one with students to provide academic support in various subjects and foster a positive, encouraging learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized tutoring for middle school students in subjects such as English, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
- Work with students to improve academic performance by helping them understand course content, complete assignments, and prepare for tests.
- Develop personalized learning plans to meet the unique academic needs of each student.
- Support students in building study and organizational skills, test-taking strategies, and time management.
- Communicate regularly with teachers, parents, and other academic staff to track progress and adjust tutoring approaches as needed.
- Foster a growth mindset by encouraging students to take ownership of their learning and providing positive reinforcement.
- Maintain a record of student progress and share feedback with parents during regular progress meetings.
- Assist with homework and assignments, ensuring students understand the material and are prepared for class discussions.
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for all students.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, a specific subject area (English, Math, etc.), or a related field.
- Previous tutoring experience, particularly with middle school students, is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of middle school curriculum in various subjects, including English, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire students.
- Patient, adaptable, and able to adjust teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Ability to collaborate with faculty, parents, and other staff members to support student success.
- A passion for working with middle school students and supporting their academic growth.
Working Conditions:
- Part-time position with flexible hours, primarily after school or during designated tutoring sessions.
- On-site position at Calverton School
