Overview:
The Carey School, a Pre-K to 5 independent school in San Mateo, California, is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated Lead Counselors for our summer program, Camp Carey. Ideal candidates are classroom teachers or those with teaching experience who are passionate about creating engaging, hands-on learning experiences in a camp setting. Lead Counselors design and lead dynamic activities based on weekly themes, foster an inclusive and supportive environment, and serve as role models for both campers and staff. Working closely with Assistant Counselors, they ensure a fun, safe, and enriching camp experience where every child feels valued and confident.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Auxiliary Programs Director, key responsibilities include:
- Designing and leading diverse, age-appropriate activities aligned with weekly themes.
- Managing and staying within a weekly supply budget for these activities.
- Supervising campers and leading group activities with support from an Assistant Counselor.
- Creating a positive, inclusive environment that fosters respect, teamwork, and belonging.
- Mentoring and guiding Assistant Counselors to ensure they fulfill their roles effectively.
- Collaborating with camp leadership, the CIT Program Leader, and other staff for smooth operations.
- Ensuring camper safety and well-being by following all camp protocols.
- Modeling enthusiasm and leadership as a role model for campers and staff.
- Managing camper behavior, resolving conflicts, and promoting positive interactions.
- Maintaining a clean, organized, and well-equipped camp environment.
- Supporting and mentoring Counselors-in-Training (CITs) while keeping the CIT Program Leader informed.
- Communicating effectively with camp leadership, staff, and parents/guardians as needed.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with youth in a camp, school, or recreational setting required.
- Classroom teaching experience or experience leading youth programs strongly preferred.
- Experience designing and implementing camp activities and/or curriculum preferred.
- Strong leadership, communication, initiative, and mentorship skills.
- Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment with patience and flexibility.

- Pay Rate: $25-30 per hour
