Position Overview
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a crucial role in the strategic planning, financial management, and operational effectiveness of the Carroll Center. This position will provide leadership in the areas of financial forecasting, budgeting, accounting, and resource allocation to ensure the long term sustainability and financial health of the organization. The ideal candidate will possess both a visionary strategic mindset and hands-on expertise in nonprofit accounting practices, enabling them to guide the organization’s financial operations with accuracy, integrity, and foresight.
As the CFO, you will be a key member of the senior leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and working closely with the President and CEO.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Strategy & Growth
- Collaborate with the President and CEO and senior leadership to develop and implement long-term financial strategies aligned with the organization’s mission and goals.
- Provide guidance and recommendations on financial decisions, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and sustainability.
- Oversee the development of annual financial plans, including operating and capital budgets, ensuring sound financial performance and accessibility.
- Oversee the development and compliance of financial practices, policies and procedures.
- Lead the creation of comprehensive financial budgets, ensuring adequate funding for programs, administrative expenses, and operational growth.
- Monitor budget performance throughout the fiscal year, providing timely and accurate
- reporting to the President and CEO, COO, board, and other key stakeholders.
- Develop and manage financial forecasting processes to anticipate and plan for future resource needs.
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and tax filings, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, providing insight and transparency into the organization’s financial status.
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of required filings and audits, including form 990 and financial statements.
- Maintain strong internal controls and adherence to financial best practices, ensuring compliance with nonprofit regulations, grant and endowment requirements, and industry standards.
- Continuously enhance nonprofit accounting systems, policies, and processes to improve financial adaptability and effectiveness.
- Manage relationships with auditors, investment and banking advisors, state and local agencies, school districts, and regulatory bodies.
- Assess and mitigate financial risks, implementing appropriate strategies to safeguard the organization’s assets, including the oversight and management of insurance policies.
- Lead and mentor the finance and accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance environment.
- Work closely with the President, COO and board of directors, providing detailed financial analysis and insights to support decision-making.
- Build cross-functional partnerships with program, development, and operations teams to ensure alignment of financial goals with organizational needs.
- Proven experience (minimum of five years) in financial management or accounting, with a strong background in nonprofit financial operations.
- A strategic thinker with the ability to balance long-term financial planning with day-to-day financial operations.
- In-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, financial regulations, and reporting standards (e.g., GAAP, IRS compliance).
- Experience with budget development, forecasting, and financial analysis at a senior level.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders.
- Proficient in accounting software (e.g., GP Dynamics, Business Central) and Microsoft Excel; experience with nonprofit-specific financial software is a plus.
- A CPA or advanced degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
