Cathedral is currently seeking an English Teacher for Grades 7 and 8 (Upper School) .
The English Teacher for Grades 7 and 8 reports directly to the Head of Upper School and is an integral member of the Upper School team and English department at The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine. Candidates must have prior teaching experience as an English or Humanities teacher working with middle school-aged students. The ideal candidate will have experience with The Writing Revolution curriculum (also known as Judith Hochman Basic Writing Skills) to support all students using a structured yet authentic approach to writing. A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree is preferred.
In support of The Cathedral School's mission, the Upper School English Teacher (Grades 7 & 8) must be prepared to view curriculum, classroom, and school culture through a lens focused on equity and justice. A nurturing and caring personality is essential.
Teacher Responsibilities :
- Teaches two sections of 7th Grade English and two sections of 8th Grade English
- Develops students' reading, writing, listening, and research skills
- Plans lessons, units, and projects with a wide range of texts representing diverse voices, ideas, and perspectives and using backward-design frameworks
- Proctors / teaches an elective in the Upper School
- Lead the 7th Grade Play with support from the Music Teacher, Art Teacher, and 7th Grade Dean

The Upper School English Teacher (Grades 7 & 8) is a 10-month, in-person role with a start date of late August 2025. The hiring range for this position is $70,000 - $85,000.
