Overview

The Campus Police Officer is responsible for providing a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors on campus.  The role requires law enforcement, security, and customer service skills to protect the campus and respond to emergencies.  The Campus Police Officer is responsible for patrolling the campus, enforcing laws and campus regulations, responding to calls for service, making arrests, and conducting investigations.  In addition to law enforcement duties, the Campus Police Officer may provide safety security advisories, participate in educational activities, assist with campus events, and provide customer service.  The Campus Police Officer should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be committed to protecting the campus community.

 

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $25.96/hour.  

Responsibilities

  • Patrol in assigned areas on campus, secure and permit access to buildings, respond to requests for police service, and effect the arrest of offenders when appropriate.
  • Shall be courteous and orderly in their dealings with the university community and the public.
  • Prepare police reports and written responses to inquiries concerning the performance of duties and other job-related forms.
  • While performing the patrol function, focus on crime prevention and investigation, safety education and emergency preparedness, response and recovery. 
  • Possess a working knowledge of the laws of the District of Columbia pertaining to enforcing laws and protecting life and property.
  • Conduct investigations of criminal and non-criminal activities occurring on CUA property. 
  • Conduct investigations of vehicle accidents occurring on CUA property.
  • Investigate complaints of sick or injured persons on campus.
  • While patrolling, write traffic tickets, control traffic, and enforce traffic regulations.
  • Be responsible for safeguarding all property coming into their possession per university and departmental guidelines. 
  • Note and report items needing attention, such as broken windows, lights out, etc.
  • Respond to emergencies, alarm breaks, and fire alarms as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. 
  • Must be able to obtain a Special Police commission in the District of Columbia
  • Must be capable of carrying out police-related tasks
  • Must communicate effectively, orally and in writing. 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Possession of a current and valid U.S. driver’s license appropriate to the type of university vehicle that will be driven. 
  • An acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving Record (MVR) as stipulated in the Vehicle Guidelines and Procedures Manual administered through the Environmental Health and Safety office.
  • Annual clearance of MVR check through the Office of Environmental Health and Safety.
  • The ability to drive a vehicle (campus or non-campus) on behalf of university business.
