The mission of the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA) is to monitor the Massachusetts health care system and to provide reliable information and meaningful analysis for those seeking to improve health care quality, affordability, access, and outcomes. CHIA also acts as a principal repository for health care data collected by the state and is responsible for key data assets such as the Massachusetts All-Payer Claims Database (APCD) and the Massachusetts Acute Hospital Case Mix Databases.
CHIA’s Data Quality Assurance Team is seeking a summer Data Science Quality Assurance (QA) intern to work on our Enhanced All-Payer Claims Database (E-APCD).
The Data Science QA intern will be a vital part of the E-APCD project, aiding in documentation, testing, and testing optimization. Applicants should be current students or recent graduates and have substantive prior experience working with SQL data and be able to clearly communicate results to diverse audiences. The successful candidate will communicate proactively and collaboratively, have excellent attention to detail, and aspire for continuous learning and professional development.
We foster a flexible, collaborative environment, offering a hybrid model that balances in-person and remote work. Our hybrid approach allows you to work alongside your colleagues in our vibrant Boston office at 501 Boylston Street for at least two designated days per week, with the flexibility to work remotely on others. This is a temporary full-time position that will likely run from June through August, with a possible full or part-time extension in the fall (exact start and end dates are negotiable). The expected hourly rate is $22-$27/hour, paid on a 37.5-40-hour work week

Specifically, the Data Science QA intern will:
- Work collaboratively with Data Quality Assurance (QA) E-APCD team members on testing, testing documentation, and database dictionary documentation.
- Run tests using SQL, Python, and PySpark in Snowflake and participate in code reviews and code enhancements.
- Assess data quality through testing and report defects in data or areas where improvements are needed.
- Support the QA E-APCD team in enhancing and optimizing testing, especially testing automation in Python and PySpark.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Educational Foundation: Possess a bachelor’s degree in current students or recent graduates of advanced degree programs is a plus, providing the necessary foundational skills for success in this role.
- Experience with: Snowflake, Python, and PySpark along with data management and analysis using SQL
- Effective Communication: Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to articulate complex technical issues clearly and persuasively. Engage stakeholders and foster collaboration through compelling communication
