Medical assistants play a crucial role in healthcare settings. Their responsibilities include:

1. Patient Care

  • Taking vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, etc.)
  • Preparing patients for examinations
  • Assisting physicians during exams

2. Administrative Tasks

  • Scheduling appointments
  • Managing patient records
  • Handling insurance forms

3. Clinical Procedures

  • Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens
  • Performing basic laboratory tests
  • Administering medications as directed by physicians

4. Communication

  • Explaining treatment procedures to patients
  • Providing instructions for medication and special diets
  • Liaising between patients and healthcare providers

5. Record Keeping

  • Updating and filing patient medical records
  • Coding and filling out insurance forms
  • Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services

Medical assistants must maintain a high level of professionalism, attention to detail, and compassion in their daily responsibilities.

 

General Accountabilities

  • Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations.
  • Cleans treatment rooms following patient examinations.
  • Interviews patients to obtain their medical history.
  • Records patient medical history, vital statistics, and test results in patient medical files.
  • Performs routine screening tests, such as height and weight measurements and blood pressure checks.
  • Draws blood, removes sutures, changes dressings.
  • Purchases and maintains supplies and equipment.
  • Cleans and sterilizes medical equipment and instruments.
  • Properly disposes of contaminated supplies.
  • Assists physicians during fine needle aspiration biopsy by handing over instruments and materials.

Job Qualifications

  • Experience: 1-2 years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Licenses/Certifications: CPR and first aid certification required; certification as a medical assistant (CMA) preferred

 

Skills

  • Proven working experience as a medical assistant
  • Knowledge of medical office management systems and procedures
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and priorities work
  • Social perceptiveness and service oriented
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office and patient management software
  • Degree in medical assistance
  • Experience with EMR or eClinicalWorks
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)
