What are the responsibilities and job description for the Full Time Sterile Processing Specialist-Outpatient Surgery position at The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery?
Applicant must be available for as early a start as 530a and/or as late a finish as 5-6p. Daily start/end times will vary based on case schedule. MUST have previous SPD and Surgical Tech experience. This is a dual-role position.
The SPD position is responsible for cleaning, packaging, sterilizing and stores the supplies, instruments and equipment. Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing, the position is responsible for cleaning, packaging, sterilizing and stores the supplies, instruments and equipment.
The Surgical Technologist is responsible for filling the surgical scrub role on all types of minor and major surgical procedures dependent on individual competencies in each surgical specialty. She/he will assist physicians and nurses in various medical and technical procedures.
These functions must be in compliance with the philosophy of the hospital, standards of practice and regulations of governing agencies.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated understanding of sterilization principles required
- Experience in central processing functions preferred
- Constant and frequent judgment and response requiredHigh School graduate or equivalent required
- Certification as a Surgical Technologist required
- Two years previous experience as an operating room technician
- Current BLS
- Flexibility in schedule. Candidate must be able to make a regular commitment to provide hours to the facility
- Medical Clerical experience preferred.
- Two years clerical experience preferred.
- Strong communication skills required.
- Proficient in MS Office applications required which include Outlook, Word, Excel and Powerpoint required.
Occupational Exposure
Category I exposure to blood borne pathogens, frequent exposure to chemical hazards and may encounter radiation hazards.
Responsibilities
- Adheres to the sterilization process policies and procedures.
- Cleans each item according to manufacturers’ instruction.
- Inspects instruments for damage and defects, lubricates items as required, and schedules service as needed.
- Notifies supervisor of any equipment issues.
- Schedules and confirms Preventative Maintenance on SPD equipment is performed according to requirements.
- Communicates and coordinates with vendor representatives regarding tray arrivals and pickups.
- Determines that each item is in good working condition.
- Sorts and arranges items into proper trays according to established policy and procedure.
- Wraps trays and individual items according to established policy and procedure.
- Accurately labels each item with name and expiration date.
- Correctly operates sterilizers, ultrasonic washer and other equipment for processing items.
- Positions items correctly in sterilizer and selects proper cycle; seeks assistance when needed.
- Checks indicators for proper functioning.
- Performs required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizer(s) and required tests on washer(s) according to established policy and procedures.
- Maintains availability of supplies for continuity or recording throughout sterilization process.
- Cleans sterilizers according to established policies and procedures.
- Maintains inventory levels and accurate records.
- Performs weekly inspections of all sterile items in the facility.
- Checks for outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilized items; replaces items as necessary.
- Places items in correct location.
- Maintains adequate inventory of supplies for the sterile processing area.
- Maintains and updates the instrument ray inventory list.
- Assists with inventory counts.
- Maintains current information regarding routine preference cards.
- Biohazardous waste disposal as needed.
- Housekeeping duties as needed.
- Assists with patient care as needed.
- Complies with Facility practice standards regarding competent performance of duties.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Implements principles of medical and surgical asepsis in accordance with recognized national standards and Facility specific policies and procedures.
- Coordinates communication regarding equipment and/or instrumentation sterilization needs.

- Assists surgeon in scrubbed cases.

- Pulls supplies for upcoming cases and restocks as needed.
- Demonstrates cooperative work attitude towards and with coworkers, employees, management, patients, visitors and physicians.
- Maintains a safe work environment in compliance with OSHA guidelines and infection control standards.
- Demonstrates knowledge of instrument processing from decontamination to storage of sterile packages.
- Checks room for cleanliness, availability of supplies and equipment for all assigned cases at the beginning of each day.
- Maintains proper sterile technique and applies as needed.
- Puts unused sterile supplies and instruments away at the end of the day.
- Restocks department supplies to established PAR levels.
- Adheres to attendance, punctuality, meal and break time period policies.
- Completes work in an acceptable time frame and in an independent manner.
- Carries out assigned duties in an effective, productive, and efficient manner.
