The Assistant Director - Competitive Sports Programs will lead and administer sports clubs, intramural sports, and other sports programming that appeal to a broad spectrum of students. This position will collaborate with campus partners to plan, schedule, and administer these programs with an emphasis on strengthening the sports club program.
This position will work on-site at our University of New Haven client location in West Haven, Connecticut. Essential Functions
- Oversee a comprehensive Sport Club program to deliver recruitment, retention, and student development outcomes on behalf of the client.
- Foster and maintain relationships with the client and stakeholders. Immerse themselves and the operation into the client community.
- Advise the club sports on individual activity and overall program operation.
- Develop policies, procedures, and workflows for all competitive sport programs. Communicate rules to participants
- Serve as either adviser or co-adviser to all Sport Club teams - conduct regular meetings with club leadership to assist with club budgeting, risk management, and procurement.
- Schedule practices and competitions; Cultivate relationships with external venues for off-campus practices and competitions.
- Serve as primary risk manager for Club Sports.
- Prepares and delivers required and requested reports and data to the client and CENTERS central office.
- Train officiating mechanics and game management skills
- Supervise competitive sport contests and provide staff with on-site evaluations as required.
- Manage and inventory of all club and intramural sport equipment and supplies
- Monitor team rosters, eligibility, and schedules for intramural and club teams
- Evaluate and assess program performance and effectiveness
- Encourage and support intramural teams, officials, and club sports competition travel
- Recruit, hire, train, schedule and evaluate part-time student employees
- Responsible for approving timecards and preparing necessary documents/reports for bi-weekly payroll
- Coordinate and administer the sports club program with Athletics and Student Affairs.
- Oversee Club Sports Coaches; lead hiring, onboarding, and training.
- Bachelor’s degree or 4 or more years of work experience required. Master's degree preferred.
- 2-4 years experience working in higher education, recreation, or sports
- Demonstrated experience in managing and organizing intramurals and sport clubs
- Previous experience advising student organizations
- Officiating and staff supervision experience preferred
- Demonstrated experience in implementing policies and procedures
- Familiarity with recreation/membership software
- Ability to navigate, collaborate, and work alongside other university departments
- Ability to multi-task and function in a high-energy environment
- Ability to prioritize work, develop relationships, and make quality decisions
- American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification; Instructor Certification preferred
- Office, indoor and outdoor sporting, and non-sporting events environment
- Non-smoking environment
- Moderate to loud noise
- Maintain flexible hours for occasional sporting and other events that may occur on weekends and evenings
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position 70% of the work day
- Consistently operates a computer and office equipment
- Walking or working with fitness and sport facilities 30% of the work day
- Must be able to traverse throughout the building and campus. Must be able to match speed of movement to game play.
- Regularly ascending/descending building levels and occasionally ladders or stools.
- Must be able to lift, move and set up items weighing as much as 50 lbs.
- Must be able to discuss, converse with, and exchange accurate information with patrons, staff, stakeholders, etc.
