Chapin’s Science Program
Chapin’s Science Department believes all Chapin students are scientists in the making. In Middle School Science, students work towards developing their skills as scientists with engaging and relevant content across science disciplines. The Science Department participates in ongoing curricular and pedagogical work that recognizes the inquiring scientist in every student and aligns with Next Generation Science Standards. The core of the work that students do in middle school science is asking questions and then answering these questions through authentic scientific practices, such as planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, conducting research, developing models, and using the engineering design process. Students are given the opportunity to model the work of professional scientists.
Chapin’s science professionals work as a team to develop and refine a multi-layered pedagogy with an appropriate balance of access and challenge; competition and collaboration; inquiry and instruction; skills and conceptual understanding.
