TLA- Long-Term Substitute TEACHER

POSITION SUMMARY:  This is a time limited assignment.  The Long-Term Substitute Teacher will be responsible for teaching students in the Whitney Hall School program in a special education environment.  This position will be accountable to Whitney Hall School administrators and will work with the entire Children’s Center staff regularly. This Teacher is expected to perform other related duties as assigned and to keep teacher work hours, which includes attending morning and afternoon meetings.  

At any point this position can be replaced by any newly hired Special Education Teacher and this position will no longer be available.  If this position was to be filled, you would be placed back into your previous position or one similar to the same previous pay.

TECHNOLOGIES: Microsoft Office Suite 

Accountable and responsible for the following results:

  • Plan classroom lessons and assessments for students which provide for individual differences and varying grade level expectations.
  • Teach English, Math, Language Arts, Science and/or Health, Reading, Life Skills and Social Studies.
  • Assess the academic strengths and weaknesses of each student.
  • Provides information for students’ PPTs and IEPs. 
  • Prepare quarterly benchmark reports and semi-annual progress reports on students.
  • Participate in PPTs, Treatment Teams and Case Conferences for assigned students.
  • Uses a variety of teaching techniques that foster student involvement.
  • Reviews students’ IEPs and evaluations to ensure adherence to special education timelines and students’ goals and objectives.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment by consistently implementing routines, transitions, and procedures.
  • Prepares records and reports with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Will be responsible for setting up substitute folders.
  • Attends all CCG (Crisis Consultant Group) trainings and recertifications and is able to use techniques as needed.
  • Maintains all required agency mandatory trainings.
  • Participates in staff and departmental meetings, in-service training programs, and attends meetings as required, workshops, and conferences.     Effectively utilizes supervision.
  • Maintains appropriate personal boundaries with young people and families served at The Children's Center of Hamden.  Adheres to The Children’s Center of Hamden’s Boundary Code of Ethics.
  • Performs any other related work assigned.
  • Is aware of the Policy and Procedure Manuals and can access information as needed.

  • Identifying inequities and bias, and appropriately raising concerns.
  • Interacting with others respectfully.
  • Respecting the experiences of individuals who do not share your race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or any other relevant quality.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

One to two years teaching or related experience desired.  Ability to work in a special education setting with emotionally disturbed and learning-disabled children and adolescents.  Some knowledge of substance abuse issues is desired.  Comprehensive and current knowledge in all subjects taught.     Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Ability to differentiate instruction across a range of grade levels.

CERTIFICATIONS

In accordance with Connecticut State Board of Education requirements for appropriate certification recognized by the CT State Department of Education.
