Overview
The role of the School Nurse is to manage and coordinate the school's health services program based on requirements established by school division policies, procedures, and protocols, as well as local, state, and national regulations. This position is responsible for maintaining and operating the school's nursing office.
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with procedures, protocols, and health service instructions.
- Provide nursing care and physical screenings to students, implementing first aid measures as needed.
- Assess, plan, intervene, evaluate, manage, and refer students for appropriate healthcare services.
- Counsel students on issues such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance abuse to facilitate responsible decision-making.
- Implement and record required health screening programs, notifying parents when further medical evaluation is necessary.
- Establish and update student health and immunization records.
- Maintain student clinic records and prepare required reports.
- Administer prescribed medications and nursing care procedures.
- Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff as needed.
- Develop Individual Healthcare Plans for students.
- Complete preliminary nursing assessments and assist physicians with child study physical examinations.
- Orient and train staff on medical procedures for students with specific health needs.
- Present and maintain appropriate OSHA standards regarding exposure to bloodborne pathogens and infectious materials.
- Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
- Act as a liaison between the school, home, health department professionals, and other community agencies.
- Coordinate presentations on health-related topics for school staff.
- Maintain clinic equipment and assess the need for medical supplies annually.
- Provide students with contact information for private and community healthcare resources.
- Refer students to school support staff and healthcare providers as needed.
- Ensure students and families/guardians have access to health insurance information, including Medicaid and Husky programs.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- A minimum of one to three years of nursing experience.
- Experience in school settings, pediatrics, emergency care, triage, psychiatry, and/or physician offices preferred.
- Current RN license (C license).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with children in educational or healthcare settings.
Supervisory Responsibility
None.
Work Environment
School-based setting, with responsibilities requiring direct interaction with students, staff, and parents.
Physical Demands
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with students, staff, and parents.
- Requires walking, bending, standing, and physical interventions to maintain a safe learning environment.
- Must be able to move students or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs, position students in specialized equipment, and/or change diapers as needed.
