Overview
Under the direction of the school principal, the Special Education Teacher is responsible for planning and providing appropriate learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. This role focuses on creating a flexible program and learning environment that offers specialized instruction, allowing students with disabilities to benefit from the general education curriculum as much as possible when supported with supplemental educational counselors, accommodations, and other needed supports. This position is part of Pathways Academy in New Haven.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students in a positive environment.
- Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
- Instruct students in academic subjects using techniques such as phonetics, multi-sensory learning, and repetition to reinforce learning and meet students' varying needs and interests.
- Teach socially acceptable behavior as outlined in students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) by employing techniques within a positive behavioral support system.
- Implement curriculum modifications identified in IEPs using various instructional techniques and technologies.
- Plan and conduct balanced instructional activities that provide students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
- Establish and enforce behavior rules and maintain an environment conducive to learning, following school policies.
- Meet with parents to discuss their children's progress and determine individualized educational needs.
- Collaborate with school personnel on IEP development and review.
- Maintain accurate student records and prepare reports as required by law, district policies, and administrative regulations.
- Review IEPs and progress reports as scheduled.
- Set clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects, and communicate these to students.
- Use the school’s positive behavioral management program effectively.
- Provide crisis intervention when necessary for students.
- Assist in data collection for classroom interventions.
- Participate in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings for assigned students.
- Assist in preparing data for local, state, and federal reports.
- Maintain professional competence through staff development activities and curriculum meetings.
- Perform other related tasks as required.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of effective instruction and behavioral supports for students with disabilities
- Understanding of curriculum, instructional techniques, and positive behavioral support
- Ability to provide behavioral support and follow state and federal special education mandates
- Must hold a current Connecticut educator certification in special education (grades 6-12)
