Job Description
This role helps to foster self-reliance, care for the poor and the needy, and provide opportunities for giving and service by: helping members become economically and emotionally self-reliant; providing access to essential food and clothing items, helping members prepare for and respond to disasters; and providing humanitarian aid to relieve suffering; thus furthering the mission of the Church. Quality Assurance Technologists and Specialists are responsible for developing, implementing, training on, and monitoring food safety prerequisite programs, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), Food Defense Plans, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs) for supply chain operations which include: ranches, farms, orchards, gardens, canneries, processing plants, storage facilities, warehouses, transportation fleet, and food distribution outlets.
Quality Assurance Technologists and Specialists ensure that food safety programs are effective and comply with government regulations and internal food safety policies. They interact in a professional manner with regulatory personnel and serve as a liaison between operation managers and the regulatory entity. They assist the operation manager(s) in developing a culture of food safety awareness and commitment, and they serve as a technical resource for food safety, quality assurance, sanitation, and regulatory requirements.
Positions are located at both the plant level and at the supply chain level within the Welfare Services Quality Assurance laboratory. Assignments will likely rotate over time to ensure adequate cross-training and professional development.

Plant Level (Dairy Plant, Mill, Meat Plant) - Reports to the operation manager with a dotted line to WSQA Manager.:
80% ensure compliance with all food safety regulations and internal policies related to food safety and quality;
10% technical expert in their field of production and a support to operations in solving problems;
10% manage the laboratory and conduct laboratory analysis and sampling.
Supply Chain Level (Laboratory)
50% ensure compliance with all food safety regulations and internal policies;
40% provide technical support to operations managers in an assigned specialty such as: label development and compliance, microbiology testing and training, HACCP, sanitation, food defense plan development and training, product specification development and maintenance (ingredients and packaging), gathering supplier information for assessing food safety, developing processing procedures, evaluating process deviations and other manufacturing irregularities that impact safety and quality, new product development and improvement, conduct research and other special projects, serve as a process authority, conduct food safety, records, and GMP audits of division operations and suppliers, and cross-train on other specialties; 10% assist operations in developing internal food safety policies. Reports directly to the Welfare Services Quality Assurance Manager.
Qualifications
Integrity and the courage to appropriately stand up for what is right. Strong interpersonal skills. Positive personality. Clear and concise communication skills. Ability to effectively instruct and train others in quality assurance, quality control, regulatory affairs, and sanitation. Food safety experience. Proficient in food laboratory analysis. Experience with manufacturing processes, product development, scale up, food safety systems auditing, regulatory agencies, and food microbiology is desired. Degrees should be in food science, food technology, food microbiology, food safety, food processing, food engineering, microbiology or chemistry.
Quality Assurance Specialist - BS with 5 years of experience or a MS with 3 years experience.
Individuals with equivalent years of food quality assurance or food processing experience may, at management's discression, be exempt form the bachelor's degree requirement, but not from the master's degree requirement.
