What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Trek Guide - Sixth Crossing Wyoming position at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?
The purpose of this role is to provide a positive, safe outdoor experience for youth and their leaders at the Wyoming Mormon Trail Sites. This is a seasonal individual contributor role that works as part of a team under the supervision of Church History Department leadership. Trek Guides will lead large groups on different trek routes, most frequently on a 2-day, 30 mile trek from Sixth Crossing to Rock Creek Hollow. The incumbent of this role must be temple worthy. Trekking begins Memorial Day and runs through mid-August (12 weeks)
- Provide positive, safe experiences for large trek groups associated with the Sixth Crossing Mormon Trail Site
- Train adult leaders on trail etiquette and trek guidelines
- Monitor group adherence to guidelines
- Track and report infractions of access permit specifications
- Communicate with missionaries and group leaders regarding trail conditions, weather updates, and medical needs of trek participants
- Load and unload hand carts onto trailers, and haul trailer from Rock Creek Hollow to Sixth Crossing
- Camp overnight in rustic conditions
- Assist with additional trek routes, facilities maintenance, and other assignments as needed
Required:
- Experience with outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and backpacking in dry, high-altitude locations
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Confidence to lead large groups over remote and difficult terrain
- Ability to be patient, assertive, and kind when working with track participants and Church unit leaders
- Ability to be flexible with schedule and plan ahead for needs when working in a remote location
- Ability to work independently and use good judgment to make decisions in a variety of situations
- Able to hike 13-15 miles a day, multiple days in a row, while carrying a day pack (35 lbs) across rugged, semi-arid terrain at approximately 6500 feet above sea level in warm summer conditions
- Able to speak and read English fluently
- Willing to live at the Sixth Crossing Mormon Trail Site and live in shared housing with others of the same gender for the duration of employment
- Must have own reliable transportation to get to the site and travel to town for groceries and personal supplies
- Able to pass a motor vehicle record check
- To successfully perform the essential functions and incumbent must be able to meet physical requirements, including: standing and walking for long periods of time, stooping, bending, and lifting 50 lbs
Preferred:
- Experience hauling and backing trailers
- Background in modern or western history or natural science
- First aid certification or Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification
