Summary of Responsibilities
Our US employer business services a wide variety of clients through a broad array of funding arrangements, risk sharing, and strategic product offerings. A critical role of the Finance function is to balance the earnings expectations across this diverse portfolio of accounts to ensure a pathway to our near and long-term earnings commitments. With that backdrop, this leadership role owns the management of Cigna’s Healthcare’s pricing tools used to set case-level earnings targets. A successful candidate must possess a balance of exceptional business acumen and communication skills needed to influence our earnings target strategy along with mature analytical and technical skills needed to ensure our pricing tools reliably execute that strategy.
Core responsibilities of this role include:
Establish rate execution targets that align with financial goals
Work with segment Finance to develop expectations that balance earnings objectives and market feasibility
Develop targets by buyer group and funding type across the dimensions necessary to meet business needs
Keep open lines of communication between pricing, underwriting, and finance partners to ensure ongoing alignment between expectations and execution
Ensure pricing tools reliably operationalize our earnings strategy
Work with various Pricing leads to ensure that pricing assumptions result in book-level earnings estimates that align with expected results.
Enable logic and factors within rating tools to ensure that case-level estimates accurately reflect current expectations.
Oversee necessary specification development, testing, and quality control for pricing earnings tools owned by the team, minimizing issues & aiming for continual improvement
Base decisions and methodology on fundamental economics of the business
Partner with Finance and UW to optimize rate execution reporting and portfolio management
Establish alignment between pricing projections and targets, underwriting execution reporting, and financial earnings projections and variance analyses
Develop ongoing best practices and management processes
Manage and enhance ongoing management processes for case level rate increase and earnings projection batch runs
Support continuing evolution of earnings management and profit strategy
Influence development of an optimal/sustainable profit strategy for company
Identify earnings lever risks/opportunities and support realization of opportunities
Optimize component/duration/funding type strategy & growth/profitability tradeoff
Champion the use of earnings-based metrics to manage the business, ensuring partners understand and trust metrics
Stay informed on new projects and initiatives, drawing connections to the impact on earnings and modeling
Manage and develop team of actuarial resources
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Finance or related field strongly preferred; FSA preferred
7 years of actuarial experience (at least 2 in a healthcare role at a major insurer)
Strong analytical skills & technical skills, including Excel with VBA
Prefer existing understanding of relationship between pricing, underwriting, and financial results
Strong leadership skills and ability to influence and steer a cross-functional group
Strong ability to communicate persuasively with matrix partners from a wide variety of functional areas
If you will be working at home occasionally or permanently, the internet connection must be obtained through a cable broadband or fiber optic internet service provider with speeds of at least 10Mbps download/5Mbps upload.For this position, we anticipate offering an annual salary of 155,000 - 258,400 USD / yearly, depending on relevant factors, including experience and geographic location.
This role is also anticipated to be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan and long term incentive plan.
