About our opportunity:
The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Accounting Technician in the Finance Department. The Finance Department is responsible for managing the City's financial resources, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and maintaining transparency in financial reporting. This position plays a key role in processing financial transactions, vendor payments, and employee reimbursements with accuracy and efficiency.
What you’ll be doing:
Reviewing and verifying vendor invoices, employee travel expenses, and financial transactions for accuracy and compliance with City policies and accounting standards.
- Processing journal entries and maintaining financial records in the City's ERP system.
- Reviewing and reconciling financial data, including employee receipts and expenditures.
- Assisting departments with vendor payment processes and providing training as needed.
- Examining data and supporting documentation to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- Researching purchase orders, contracts, and payments to ensure proper processing and accurate posting.
- Preparing and reviewing payment batches, checks and electronic distributions to ensure accurate and timely payments to vendors and employees.
- Maintaining organized financial records and program files.

About you:
We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
- Three years of bookkeeping or accounting experience plus a High School Diploma/GED, OR
- One year of bookkeeping or accounting experience plus an Associate Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience working with Munis ERP software is preferred but not required.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to process financial data accurately.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and financial software applications.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
- Analytical skills to interpret policies, financial guidelines, and accounting procedures.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
Other things to know:
- Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Hybrid work schedule available with department director approval.
