JOB SUMMARY
This is a lead role of journeyman level in the operation, repair, and maintenance of diesel electric generating units and associated mechanical electrical auxiliary equipment. This position performs electrical, mechanical, and instrument repair and maintenance of equipment in the Wastewater Treatment facilities with emphasis on instrumentation, control panels, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Human Machine Interface (HMI) operations; inspection, calibration, troubleshooting, installation and repair of a variety of process monitoring and control equipment such as pumping control systems, communication systems, gas detectors, laboratory equipment, electronic level pressure and flow measuring, transmitting and recording devices, development and implementation of improvement projects. This position reports to and is periodically reviewed by the Maintenance Manager.
ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsible for the operations and maintenance of the diesel generating units, auxiliary equipment, and related facilities.
- Responsible for training plant operators in proper unit running conditions.
- Maintains proper operating temperatures, pressures, levels, and loads of generating units.
- Generates power at pump stations during power outages by connecting emergency generators to pump stations.
- Checks charts and controls regularly; records and logs various readings, including temperature levels and pressure levels; runs and tests standby equipment; reports any abnormal vibrations, leaks, odors, and temperatures.
- Performs and supervises unit repairs in the event of malfunction.
- Performs preventative maintenance, routine maintenance, and repairs on engines, generators, auxiliary equipment, and related facilities.
- Performs common preventative maintenance by inspecting equipment, checking voltage, amperage, tightening , cleaning equipment and locating potential problems.
- Maintains and repairs electrical equipment at pump stations, switchgear, substations, and other process control equipment.
- Develop and implement facility improvement projects.
- Read and interpret maps, engineering plans, blueprints, and diagrams.
- Must be available for emergency work when needed.
- Performs duties of a Plant Mechanic II in emergencies.
- Performs building preventative and routine maintenance on building and grounds.
- Performs related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- PLC and Relay logic.
- Electrical theory, MCCs, Switchgear, etc.
- Occupational hazards of standard safety precautions necessary in the work.
- The standard practices, methods, tools, and materials used in the mechanical, electrical trades, and demonstrated skill in their application.
- The use and operation of, but not limited to, centrifugal, piston, and diaphragm pumps.
- Motors, air compressors, and other related equipment.
- Diesel generator engine operation and repair.
- To operate the Treatment Plant's standby generators when needed.
- Demonstrated working knowledge and hands on experience with high voltage industrial equipment.
- To perform skilled mechanical tasks independently.
- To read and interpret electrical, instrumentations controls, process flows, mechanical drawings, and diagrams.
- Complete work from sketches, blueprints, and diagrams.
- To read meters and gauges correctly.
- To act quickly and competently in making necessary wastewater operation adjustments.
- To demonstrate proficiency in completion of mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.
- To understand and carry out oral and written instructions, as well as established and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
- To communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and the ability to understand and accurately follow oral, verbal, and written instructions from various levels.
- To prepare and maintain accurate written reports and records.
- To solve complex problems and work effectively under stress.
- High school graduate or GED equivalent.
- Associate degree or equivalent experience in a relevant technical field from an accredited college or university.
- Considerable experience as a Journeyman Electrician.
- Three (3) years of experience providing broad areas of expertise in the instrumentation and electrical fields.
- Possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
