Job Description:
In this role, you will be responsible for the operation of equipment used in landscape construction; repair and maintenance of municipal parks, athletic fields, rights-of-way and drainage and irrigation systems; as well as leading a crew in using a variety of machines, tools, and equipment. Primary responsibilities include grading of parking lots and project sites; field damage repairs and improvements; ballfield renovations and cultural practices such as aerification and topdressing; and mowing/grooming of athletic fields.
Examples of Duties:
- Sample projects include, but are not limited to: Site/ Parking Lot grading, Hardscape subbase preparation, Baseball infield grading/grooming, Drainage installation, Planting Area Preparation/Installation of Plants and/or sod.
- Routinely operates heavy equipment such as Backhoes, Excavators, and Dump trucks utilized in renovations, maintenance, and emergency recovery.
- Drives and operates multiple pieces of equipment and implements: Zero-turn mowers, tractors, front-end loaders, skid steers, trenchers, vibratory rollers, flail mowers, Bush-hogs, Box blades, grading drags, ballfield grooming equipment, etc.
- Completes work orders and daily worksheets.
- Performs daily maintenance on equipment operated and maintains records of such maintenance.
- Performs, evaluates, and makes daily inspections of work in progress at various facilities/worksites, and makes necessary recommendations for schedule modifications.
- Interprets drawings (landscape, hardscape, grading plans), schematic diagrams and confers with management or staff to determine quality and reliability standards.
- Inspects service call sites, and compiles estimates of work required and materials needed.
- Observes employees using necessary tools/instruments to verify that equipment is being operated and maintained according to quality assurance standards.
- Supervises assigned crew constructing and/or maintaining City parks, property or rights-of-way using a variety of machine and hand tools and equipment.
- Maintains all equipment and tools in good working condition.
- Inspects work areas to determine type of work required and materials and equipment to be used.
- Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.
- Interprets policies to workers and enforces safety regulations.
- Performs and interprets job orders to workers, and assigns duties.
- Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.
- Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crew.
- Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.
- Initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
- Maintains time and production records.
- Confers with other supervisors to coordinate activities of the division.
- Performs activities of workers supervised.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree (AA/AS) and 4 years of related experience and/or training; or High School; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s Permit – Class B at the time of application.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License – Class B within 6 months of employment.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- SC Pesticide Applicators certification
Other Necessary Requirements:
- In the event of major storms or other emergency situations, this position may be subject to 24-hour shifts or any other emergency schedule that is necessary to meet the City’s needs.
