The City of Coos Bay is soliciting applications for the position of Library Assistant I with a preference for bilingual, English/Spanish, candidates. JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs clerical and semi-professional work assisting in various phases of library activities including circulation and technical processing. Performs related work as required. Employees in this class may be assigned to more than one library service division where considerable judgment is exercised and the work only reviewed periodically.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of the Deputy Library Director who reviews work for conformance with established library policies and procedures. May work under the day-to-day supervision of a division Librarian.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision of other employees is not a normal responsibility of an employee in this class.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this classification may perform any of the following duties. However, these examples do not include all the specified tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.

  • Assists with operation of the public service desks.
  • Operates library equipment including photocopiers, fax machine, personal computers, and printers.
  • Performs circulation duties.
  • Performs physical and technical processes regarding newspapers, magazines, and other library materials.
  • Processes library materials for the release to public.
  • Ensures accurate shelving order by shelving and shelf reading materials.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Demonstrated high level customer services. Skill and ability to operate computers and other library or office equipment. Demonstration of high-level technology skills. Ability to understand oral and written instructions and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with co-workers and the general public and to function within a team in providing library service. Ability to work under pressure at busy public service desks. Ability to learn library classification systems. Ability to fluently speak and read Spanish is desired.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Must be able to develop and maintain positive cooperative team-oriented relationships with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and other you come in contact with.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years of customer service experience preferred. Graduation from high school or the equivalent GED certificate required. Any other satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which demonstrates the ability to perform the work may be considered.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Standard office and library equipment including RFID and a wide variety of technology.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Ability to speak in order to interact with library users and co-workers. Ability to move from one area to another quickly. Ability to reach arms above head to place or retrieve objects weighing up to ten pounds on 7-foot shelves. Ability to bend, kneel, sit, twist, squat, stand, crawl, climb and balance and to change positions quickly and frequently.

Ability of fine motor skills. Vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus while engaged in tasks. Ability to hear in order to interact with library users or co-workers in an immediate way. Ability to push and pull book trucks with a force of up to 2.75 pounds.

Ability to lift and carry piles of books or supplies weighing up to 25 pounds. Ability to spend up to eight hours at a public service desk, with standard meal and rest breaks. Ability to use a computer to access, input, retrieve and manipulate data in an efficient manner, including times of simultaneous interaction with library users and co-workers. Ability to frequently and quickly communicate using a telephone.

Ability to learn detailed library practices and procedures. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, with staff, volunteers and library users. Ability to gather, read, interpret, organize and apply sometimes large volumes of detailed information related to library services. Ability to exercise good judgment in interpreting library policies and procedures. Ability to efficiently plan and organize personal daily tasks.

Ability to use basic math skills in order to carry out tasks such as making change. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to sort numerically, using whole numbers and decimals. Ability to alphabetize using the English language alphabet. Ability to shift quickly back and forth between mental tasks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level is generally low. Work environment includes the presence of book dust; concrete floors; close proximity to operating machines; central air conditioning; fluorescent lights; frequent interruptions from telephone, people and equipment; sharing work stations with other staff and volunteers; contact with library users from all walks of life with varying physical and mental abilities.

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

GENERAL SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday 12pm – 6pm, 20 hours/week; subject to change for operational need
