JOB SUMMARY
As a Swim Instructor, you will play a vital role in promoting water safety and providing quality swim instruction to individuals of all ages and skill levels. This position requires strong communication skills, patience, and a passion for teaching. Swim Instructors are responsible for creating a positive and supportive learning environment, helping participants develop swimming skills, and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, organize, and conduct swimming lessons for individuals and groups of various ages and skill levels.
- Monitor and enforce safety regulation.
- Evaluate the swimming abilities of participants and place them in appropriate skill levels.
- Provide constructive feedback to help participants improve their skills and communicate with participants and their guardians.
- Ensure the safety of all participants during lessons.
- Enforce safety rules and respond promptly to any emergencies or incidents.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure visitors are wearing appropriate gear and adhering to aquatic facility rules.
- Communicate with the Facilities and Operations Manager about facility issues and concerns.
- Maintain accurate records of participant progress and attendance.
- Complete required paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Previous experience as a swimming instructor is preferred.
- Must be at least 16 years old with reliable transportation to and from work.
- Extensive knowledge of swimming and familiarity instruction strategies.
- Lifeguard training required. First Aid, CPR, AED, and swimming instructor certification (e.g., Red Cross Water Safety Instructor).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Must possess a demonstrated level of ability and experience in areas of oral and written communications.
- Customer service experience is a plus.
- Ability to work with people and calm/deescalate tense situations when necessary.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
- Must have good swimming skills.
- Must have a positive demeanor when in contact with the public.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work environment performed in an outdoor setting. The Swim Instructor will typically work morning hours and weekends. The park is open from the first week in June to the first week in August so frequent exposure to warm temperatures should be expected.
POST OFFER TESTING REQUIRED
- The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore, successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
- Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
