What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sanitation Equipment Operator position at The City of Emporia?
The Sanitation Equipment Operator position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the refuse collection crew and heavy automotive equipment used in the collection of refuse. The refuse driver determines if overweight and hazardous items placed out for pick up can be taken.
Essential Functions
· Operates heavy automotive use in the collection of refuse and trash;
· Performs minor mechanical maintenance, service, and maintenance work on equipment;
· Reports needed truck repairs and servicing;
· Checks and maintains safety and first aid equipment and supplies on truck;
· Checks vehicle gauges for malfunctions;
· Cooperates with the public along the collection route;
· Records information on needed container repairs;
· Maintains daily route sheets;
· Supervises a crew of workers in the safe operation of equipment;
· Dumps trash load at correct location;
· Observes and obeys all traffic laws;
· Inspects commercial containers for need or replacement;
· Determines cubic yard and weight;
· Checks for pedestrians and vehicles in blind spots when driving;
Marginal Functions
· Assists in the collection of refuse;
· Assists other divisions as needed;
· May perform other duties deemed necessary as needed.
Sanitation Equipment Operator Position Requirements
Experience: One to three years of heavy truck driving experience is preferred. The employee in this position is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably
well after six months in the position.
Education:High school diploma or GED is required
License: Requires a valid Kansas CDL
Knowledge:
· thorough knowledge of refuse truck routes, maintenance of equipment, and hazardous materials
· thorough knowledge of safety requirements and procedures in working assignments
Skills & Abilities:
· good mathematical aptitude
· ability to receive and follow oral and written instructions
· ability to prepare reports and maintain records
· ability to operate a forklift, refuse truck, roll off truck, and other department equipment
Problem solving is a factor in this position. Problems include watching for children, pedestrians, and maneuvering truck in traffic.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.15 - $20.04 per hour
