ABOUT THE JOB
The work in this class involves initial training and the independent, safe, and efficient operation of the City’s passenger buses on regular or special routes, including collecting fares and providing information to passengers. Bus Operators are the public-contact representatives for the City’s transit system. As such, they exercise a high degree of caution and courtesy in the transportation of passengers.
BUS OPERATOR SALARY RANGE
- $28.15 / hour during training, not to exceed 30 days

Upon successful completion of training (5-step salary range)
- Through 6 months: $30.07
- 7-12 months: $32.14
- 13-24 months: $34.21
- 25-36 months: $36.29
- 37 months: $38.44
- Longevity Pay, up to $1.09 / hour additional
QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Applicants must meet the basic threshold minimum requirement stated in the City’s supplemental questionnaire.
- Applicants for the position of Bus Operator must successfully pass all elements of the hiring process, including a driving record check, background check, pre-employment medical exam and drug screen. This position is considered safety sensitive under Federal law.

- The Bus Operator Supplemental Questionnaire
- Applications must be submitted through the City’s online application system by 5:00 p.m. on March 3, 2024 to be considered.
- LATE, INCOMPLETE, FAXED, OR EMAILED APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
- Responses to the supplemental questionnaire will be individually reviewed and evaluation (weighted 30%)
- Top scoring applicants will be called to an oral panel evaluation (weighted 70%), tentatively scheduled mid-March.
- The ranked Civil Service eligibility register for this position is subject to continuous modification as a result of the open/continuous nature of the process; however, scores earned as a result of this screening process are valid for twelve (12) months after certification by the Civil Service Commission.
- A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
- The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- VPP language change 2024: Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
- Any position requiring a CDL or the performance of a safety-sensitive function will be subject to the City of Everett’s random Drug and Alcohol Policy per Department of Transportation regulations.
- Successful completion of a City-paid medical evaluation is a condition of employment.
- Operators may be required to work the Transit Extra Board, which in addition to regular shifts, may include multiple shift work for up to 12 hours within a 14-hour period, working Saturdays, Sundays, and the majority of holidays and working special assignments for which hours of work may exceed a normal shift.
- New hires begin employment at the first step of the salary range.
- This job classification is represented by Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Division Number 883.
