The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the civil service examination for ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN/GIS Mapping.
About the Job:
This is technical, moderately complex, engineering support work performed in the field and office. Engineering Technician, GIS/Utility Mapping emphasis is assigned technical support for a variety of tasks and projects related to the City’s GIS/utility mapping functions. Employees in this class may be expected to have technical knowledge and proficiencies, gained through training and experience, in one or more of the following areas depending on assignment: record keeping, graphics, project scheduling, use of GIS software, and field research. The work of Engineering Technicians (GIS/Utility Mapping) may be reviewed while in progress or upon completion by a technical supervisor. Once an employee gains proficiency in his/her assigned tasks, more independence and discretion is expected in handling projects and priorities.

About the Division:
The Everett Public Works Department is responsible for water and wastewater systems, surface and stormwater management, and street maintenance. Public Works strives to maintain functional, safe, and efficient infrastructure for all Everett residents. The Utility Mapping group is part of the Public Works department and maintains most of the City’s GIS data. Utility Mapping also provides support for other groups within the department as well as external clients.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Successful completion of a two (2) year course in civil engineering or GIS technology at a community college or vocational institute, which included courses in GIS mapping technology and related mapping software; AND
- One (1) year of technical experience directly related to GIS technology, including work with public works and utilities, civil engineering, mapping, aerial photography, and related mapping software; OR
- Any equivalent combination of training or experience.

EXAMINATION STEPS
- There will be a pre-screening of all applications.
- Responses to the supplemental questionnaire will be individually reviewed and evaluated (weighted 30%).
- Top-scoring applicants will be called to an oral panel interview (weighted 70%) to take place tentatively mid March.
- All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
IMPORTANT NOTES
- A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
- The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
- Extensive background checks will be conducted.
- This job classification is represented by the AFSCME Union.
