Nature of Work
The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/competitive basis for the civil service examination for a Golf and Grounds Equipment Technician.
About the Job:
Under the general supervision of a supervisor, employees in this classification perform work in the maintenance and repair of small tools, equipment, engines, and other specialized golf and grounds maintenance equipment.
Primary work involves responsibility for keeping small power tools, engines, mowers, tractors, vehicles, and other assigned equipment in good repair. When repairs are needed the incumbent returns the equipment to service quickly, economically and makes recommendations to supervisor when third party maintenance is required. Employees in this classification are responsible for performing equipment troubleshooting, equipment preventive maintenance, and the scheduling and monitoring of shop repairs and maintenance. Responsibilities include overseeing inventory and the ordering of parts, tools and other related items. Specific assignments are received orally or in writing and work is performed under limited supervision. Employees may train and direct the work of Park/Golf Laborers, General Laborers, seasonal day laborers, community service workers and volunteers.
As required, employees in this classification may also perform maintenance of park, golf, ball field and associated City-owned boulevards, rights of way, lawns, grounds, golf courses and other recreational areas.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a minimum of one year of trade school, community college or similar training in automotive, small engine or grounds equipment maintenance and repair work AND
At least two years of experience in golf course or parks, small engine or similar equipment maintenance and repair (or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform this work) AND
Some experience in the preparation, set-up and maintenance of a golf course or park, including equipment operation OR
Any equivalent combination of education and experience that clearly demonstrates the ability to perform the work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid driver license at the date of hire, and the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State driver license within 30 days of hire.
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid Washington Commercial Driver License (C.D.L.), with the necessary endorsements as prescribed by law is highly desirable.
Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a First Aid/CPR certification within six (6) months of hire.
Successful completion of a background check.
Depending on the area of assignment, possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, any applicable licenses or certificates needed for mixing, handling and/or applying pesticides, which may include insecticides, herbicides, fungicides or other chemical preparations associated with grounds keeping tasks within six (6) months of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS
Willingness to perform physically demanding work activities involving sustained lifting, bending, standing, walking, climbing, and working from ladders, and the ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

EXAMINATION STEPS
The Supplemental Questionnaire is part of the application (weighed 30%). Answers must be detailed and will be blind rated.
A limited number of applicants with the highest passing grades on the supplemental questionnaire (weighted 30%) will be invited to a practical/oral board evaluation (weighted 70%) tentatively scheduled for early May.
All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process for 12 months.
IMPORTANT NOTES
A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
Extensive background checks will be conducted.
Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a city-paid pre-employment physical.
New hires begin employment at the first step of the salary range.
