Nature of Work
The City of Everett is accepting applications on an open/continuous basis for the Civil Service examination process for UTILITY LABORER. Salary post is 2024 rates and will be updated as negotiations are finalized.
This is work of a physically demanding nature performing various municipal construction, maintenance and repair activities for the Maintenance and Operations division of the Department of Public Works.
Work involves a variety of manual tasks relating to the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets, storm drainage systems, sewer systems and water systems. Assignments generally include the use of standard hand, long-handled and power tools and may require intermittent operation of a light duty truck. Work is usually performed under immediate supervision, although work assignments, which are repetitive in nature, once learned, are performed under general supervision. Work is reviewed via oral reports and direct observation of work completed.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of one-year experience and/or a combination of training in maintenance, general labor or construction, working with a variety of hand tools and related equipment. Related High School or Vocational coursework and training may be considered towards experience and training.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR CERTIFICATIONS
Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid, unrestricted (except for vision) Washington State Driver License.

EXAMINATION STEPS
The Supplemental Questions answers will be blind rated (weighed 30%).
A limited number of the top-qualifying applicants will be called for an in person practical exam (weighted 70%) tentatively scheduled for April 1, 2, and 3, 2025.
All vacancies in this job class will be filled from the ranked Civil Service register established from the examination process.
IMPORTANT NOTES
A passing grade of 70.00 or higher is required on all parts of the screening process for placement on the ranked Civil Service eligible register.
The examination process is designed to sample and measure the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Applicants claiming veterans’ preference points in accordance with RCW 41.04.010 as amended and meeting eligibility criteria must submit form DD214, or its equivalent or successor discharge paperwork, that characterizes his or her service as qualifying discharge as defined in RCW 73.04.005.
Hiring offers are contingent upon successful completion of a City-paid pre-employment physical.

New hires begin employment at the first step of the salary range.
