The Department of Public Works is recruiting for a full-time Maintenance Worker who will work for the Rapid Response Team. Be a part of a vibrant crew and enjoy great employment benefits! The vacancy will be filled at either the I, II or III level, dependent on the successful candidate’s qualifications.
A Maintenance Worker I performs general, unskilled, manual work of a routine nature. The duties require physical vigor. New Laborers are given specific work instructions. Constant supervision, however, is unnecessary for routine repetitive tasks. An incumbent may assist Laborers II and III and Equipment Operators I and II in their various tasks.
A Maintenance Worker II performs journey-level tasks of more than ordinary difficulty. An employee in this class must be able to perform heavy physical labor safely and efficiently. The Laborer II class differs from Laborer I in that tasks require a greater degree of skill and knowledge of departmental operations. Laborers work under the immediate supervision of a lead worker or Senior Crew Leaders who lays out the details of each specific assignment and constantly checks the work in process and upon completion; or performs routine tasks independently after initial instruction. An incumbent in this class may assist other Maintenance Workers and Equipment Operators I and II in their various tasks.
A Maintenance Worker III performs varied laboring tasks which involve the use of skills acquired by experience or on-the-job instruction, acts as lead worker, and substitutes for the Senior Crew Leader when required. An employee in this class must be able to perform physical labor safely and efficiently. Positions in this class differ from those in the class of Maintenance Worker II because of the part-time supervision exercised, the lead worker activities performed, and / or the level of skilled work such as Crosswalk Striping, Bike Lane Striping, Traffic Delineators, and trash collection. Normally the Maintenance Worker III work under the supervision of a Senior Crew Leader who issues oral work orders and inspects work frequently. Employees in this class may supervise Equipment Operators I or II and / or Maintenance Workers I or II when acting as lead worker or substituting for Senior Crew Leader, and assume responsibility for the crew's safety and completion of assigned tasks.
