Distinguishing Characteristics of the Class :
A Mechanic II / Diesel performs skilled maintenance and repair work on the full range of the City's motor vehicles, public works and construction vehicles and equipment. As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintain a variety of equipment to include Freightliner, International, IC Bus, Ford, and Diesel Power Equipment. This is a hands-on role that requires strong mechanical knowledge and experience in diesel engine repair. Assignments are received in the form of work orders noting the problem area or service required. An incumbent in this class determines the repair requirement and performs the repair or maintenance service under the general supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor. Illustrative Examples of Work :
Performs diagnostic checks and examines City-owned motor equipment to determine the necessary maintenance or repairs;
Perform routine maintenance and inspections on diesel engines, including oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid checks;
Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues with diesel engines, electrical and Hydraulic Systems;
Repair and replace faulty components, such as brakes, tires and fuel systems;
Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify problems and make necessary repairs;
Prepares work orders for mechanics with clear repair instructions for the work to be completed;
Provides the user agencies with time and cost estimates for the necessary service;
Follows the progress of the work and assures that user agencies are informed of any changes in cost and / or schedule;
Utilizes and administers the City's fleet management / maintenance system to obtain motor equipment service history;
Arranges for completion of work and resolves problems concerning faulty work or incorrect billing;
Establishes and maintains weekly and monthly preventive maintenance and State inspection schedules;
Performs related work as required.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Good knowledge of the standard practices, procedures, tools and equipment employed in the maintenance service and repair of the full range of light and heavy vehicles and equipment used by the City; good knowledge of the occupational safety standards and practices of automotive service and repair; good knowledge of the operational principles and methods of repairing gasoline and diesel engines; skill in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment employed in the service and repair of motor vehicles and machinery; ability to make repairs and adjustments, and to perform maintenance services; ability to locate and solve automotive mechanical and electrical problems; ability to perform tasks which frequently require strenuous physical effort; and the ability to read and write English.
Minimum and Additional Requirements :
Completion of high school or trade school-level courses in automotive maintenance and repair; and one year of experience performing motor equipment repair work at the level of Automotive Mechanic I; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. The employee must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the proper endorsement for the vehicle being driven, issued by the employee's state of residence.
Preferred : High School diploma or GED; five years of experience in automotive and emergency response vehicle maintenance that includes both preventive and corrective maintenance in the component areas of chassis, cab and body, transmission, engine, drivelines, suspension, fuel, brakes, exhaust, HVAC, pump & tank, AC / DC electrical, aerial, foam, hydraulic systems, and auxiliary systems. Certifications in ASE (both automotive and medium / heavy truck) and EVT (both fire apparatus and ambulance).
Hours : This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday from 7 : 00 a.m. to 3 : 30 p.m.
Salary & Benefits : $54,510 - $73,589, depending on qualifications. Tools and Uniforms provided.
