The City of Frederick promotes a service-delivery philosophy among City employees to provide responsive service to residents, to be efficient and results-oriented in order to make the City of Frederick a better place to live, work and visit.  Under general supervision, the Equipment/Truck Driver Operator II-IV operates a packer-type truck to collect curbside containerized refuse.  This position is considered essential personnel and must be able to respond to emergencies outside normal business hours as directed.

EQUIPMENT/TRUCK DRIVER OPERATOR III

$26.54 p/hr

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates an Automated refuse collection vehicle with an automatic transmission.
  • Performs manual refuse collection as required.
  • Operates a Rear load refuse collection vehicle to include directing the assigned crew when required.
  • Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections according to State and Federal laws, and in accordance with City rules and regulations.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Learns and follows designated collection routes.
  • Transports and off loads waste at a designated site.
  • Observes legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Two (2) years related experience and/or training as an Equipment/Truck Driver Operator II, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One (1) year of employment in the operation of a Rear load refuse collection vehicle. 
  • One (1) year of employment in the operation of an Automated refuse collection vehicle or have verified training approved by the City of Frederick.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:

  • All requirements listed in Operator II above.

REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):

  • Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
  • Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER DESIRABLES:

  • One (1) year of experience in a municipality setting. 
  • Valid Class “A” driver’s license and air brake endorsement in good standing with satisfactory driving record that meets insurability standards of the City’s insurance carrier.

OPERATOR EQUIPMENT/TRUCK DRIVER IV

 $28.53 p/hr

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises Equipment/Truck Driver Operators II-III and their respective crews.
  • Assists in collecting and analyzing route information.
  • Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections according to State and Federal laws, and in accordance with City rules and regulations.

  • Learns and follows designated collection routes.

  • Two (2) years related experience and/or training as an Operator Equipment/Truck Driver III, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One (1) year of employment in the operation of an Automated refuse collection vehicle or have verified training approved by the City of Frederick.
  • One (1) year of employment in the operation of a Rear load refuse collection vehicle.
