Job Summary
The incumbent serves as Civic and Events Maintenance Supervisor for the City of La Porte Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for supervising and directing assigned personnel and cleaning and maintaining the facility and facility grounds.
DUTIES:
Supervises and directs assigned personnel, including making work assignments and providing corrective instruction and training.
Operates various hand and power tools and heavy equipment in performing duties, including, but not limited to screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, ratchet, driver, mop, broom, and manlift.
Clean, sanitize bathrooms and fill soap dispensers, paper towels and toilet tissue as needed.
Sweeps, mops, and scrubs stairs, main halls, and gym floor, washes, dries, and folds towels, stocks and cleans bars, fills ice bin, and loads ice into water softeners.
Assists in maintaining grounds, including, but not limited to, mowing, trimming bushes, weed eating, plowing/shoveling snow, spreading salt, and picking up and emptying trash cans.
Maintains facility, including, but not limited to, picking up trash and emptying trash cans and replacing light switches.
Paints, drywalls, and plasters various areas of the Civic Auditorium as needed.
Assists with basic plumbing problems in the restrooms, kitchen area, etc.
Assists with City of La Porte events both onsite and offsite including, but not limited to, setting up tables and chairs, putting up curtains, setting up lights and sound, pulling rubber mats off gym floor and replacing, selling tickets, cleaning up after, and meeting with renters.
Works events and is point of contact between the organizer and the Civic.
Orders supplies for cleaning and outdoor work and performs related duties as assigned.
I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
High school diploma or HSE with previous experience in facility and grounds maintenance.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of a drug screen.
Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of Department safety policies and procedures and applicable OSHA safety policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of safety precautions and practices applicable to proper use of safety clothing and equipment and working with a variety of cleaning chemicals and pesticides, with ability to read and understand equipment manuals and label directions for correct mixing and use of cleaning supplies and/or pesticides.
Working knowledge of maintenance practices, building upkeep, and basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical trades.
Ability to effectively supervise and direct assigned personnel, including making work assignments and providing corrective instruction and training.
Ability to safely operate a variety of hand and power tools and heavy equipment in performance of duties, including, but not limited to, hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, ratchet, driver, mop, broom, and manlift.
Ability to physically perform the essential duties of the position, including sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, lifting, carrying, and pushing/pulling objects weighing over 50 pounds, working in extreme temperatures and wet/icy surroundings, bending/reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color and depth perception, handling, grasping and fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, speaking clearly, and driving.
Ability to effectively listen, comprehend, and communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other City, County, State departments and agencies, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Shall comply with all employer and Department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to count and perform simple arithmetic operations.
Ability to plan and layout work assignments, apply knowledge of people and locations, and read and interpret detailed prints, layouts, and specifications.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision, with others in a team environment, work on several tasks at the same time, and work rapidly for long periods sometimes under pressure.
Ability to regularly work extended hours and weekends and occasionally work evenings. Possession of a valid driver's license with a demonstrated safe driving record.
II. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs duties with priorities primarily determined by supervisor and service needs of the public. Assignments and objectives are set jointly by incumbent and supervisor. Undetected errors could result in damage to equipment or property and/or endangerment to self or others. Incumbent reports directly to the Civic and Events Director.
III. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Strain is not prolonged and effort is extended for short periods of time, usually in connection with such duties as sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling objects weighing over 50 pounds, working in extreme temperatures and wet/icy surroundings, bending/reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color and depth perception, handling/grasping/fingering objects, hearing sounds/communication, speaking clearly, and driving.
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent performs a majority of duties outside and inside an office building/facility, involving working in extreme temperatures and wet/icy surroundings, working in high places and confined areas, working in a noisy environment, and working with/near chemicals, fumes, odors, and/or dirt. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others, including wearing protective clothing/equipment.
Incumbent is regularly required to work extended hours and weekends and occasionally required to work evenings.
