Compensation: Hiring Range $18.88-$22.92; Full Range $18.88-$25.37/hr
Hours: Generally 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, plus unscheduled OT

Pre-employment Background Screening: Employment is conditional upon successful passage of a criminal history background check, reference check, DL verification, and pre-employment DOT drug screening.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties: Performs routine to semi-skilled manual and maintenance work with city parks, grounds and buildings; and performs related duties as required
Supervision Received: Works under the general and technical direction of the Public Works Supervisor

TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED
The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions in this class. Duties may vary somewhat from position to position within a class.
- Performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to maintenance in Public Works
- Operates light to medium equipment including riding mowers, small utility tractors, chain saws, refuse equipment, and trucks
- Operates light and medium construction equipment, maintenance, or repair equipment when so assigned, including tractors, refuse equipment, street sweepers, payloaders, crack filler, etc
- Operates medium to heavy construction equipment, maintenance, or repair equipment when so assigned, including road graders, payloaders, etc
- Maintains assigned hand tools and personal equipment
- May plow and apply ice control materials
- Maintains and operates a variety of tools and equipment
- Maintains City parks including general maintenance, picks up debris and cuts brush and trims trees
- Assists in maintaining City roads; spreads black top; does crack filling
- Reports any equipment malfunctions and makes proper equipment checks before each day's operation
- May keep equipment operation records
- Maintains refuse and recycling route and special pick-ups as assigned
- Performs minor maintenance operations on vehicles such as adding oil and gasoline; performs daily service on assigned vehicles
- Performs spraying and removal of weeds and brush
- Handles customer complaints directly or through the Supervisor or Department
- Performs related duties as required or assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of types and uses of tools used in the workplace
- Working knowledge of building and ground maintenance as well as repair
- Working knowledge of occupational hazards involved and knowledge of safety precautions
- Considerable skill in safe operation of motor vehicles and equipment
- Considerable ability to perform hard manual labor, including manual excavation/digging
- Considerable ability to stand, walk, sit, or operate a vehicle, sometimes for long periods of time
- Considerable ability to bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, or crawl, sometimes under adverse weather conditions
- Considerable ability to use both large and fine motor skills to manipulate objects requiring manual dexterity, and to be able to lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 80 - 100 pounds
- Considerable ability to operate a telephone and radio for work calls
- Considerable ability to operate various equipment and machinery to perform tasks
- Considerable ability to work with and around irritants, fumes, and hazardous chemicals
- Working ability to follow written and oral instructions
- Working ability to work at assigned tasks without constant supervision
- Working ability to work week-ends and holidays when necessary
- Working ability to work odd hours, split shifts and nights when necessary
- Working ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees, and to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and tactful manner
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- Must possess a valid Minnesota Class B driver's license and must meet Federal DOT regulations, or able to obtain within 12 months of hire
- Must have one year of experience in equipment operation and light maintenance
- Must have any required licenses or certifications to safely operate Public Works equipment and vehicles
- Must obtain certification in insect and weed control
- Thirty-five mile response area requirement must be met within 6 months of hire
Desirable Qualifications:
- A valid Minnesota Class A driver’s license
- Prefer building or grounds maintenance experience
