DEFINITION:
The Code Enforcement Officer is supervised by the City Zoning Administrator. He/She investigates land usage to ensure that municipal and county laws for such works are followed. He/She should be knowledgeable about the housing and zoning ordinances of their municipality, as well as the requirements for property maintenance
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Investigate the abandonment of vehicles, as these also fall under the category of maintaining the quality of the municipality. By ensuring that these requirements and provisions are followed, code enforcement officers protect the health, safety and welfare of the public.
- Issue permits or citations in accordance with the regulations of the municipality.
- Understand and comply with state and federal regulations on land usage, zoning, business permits and building access.
- Carry out all legal orders from superior officers and obey all policies and procedures of the department.
- Attend approved mandated training as needed
- Complete daily and weekly reports
- Communicate effectively, verbally, in writing, and interpersonally
- Work effectively as an individual and team member
- Comply with all laws, rules, regulations and procedures
- Assist other agencies or departments as needed
- Maintain and care for all city equipment at all times
- Perform any other related duty or task as ordered or assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education (based on years and type of experience): High School diploma/G.E.D or Associate degree in Zoning, Planning, or related field of study.
Experience: Three (3) years of work experience to include at least one (1) year of experience in code enforcement, law enforcement, building inspection, investigations, or plan review with High School diploma/GED
OR
Two (1) years of work experience with an Associate Degree in Zoning, Planning, or related field of study.
CERTIFICATION
Must possess ICC International Property Maintenance Certification or obtain it within 12 months of hire and must maintain certification from the International Code Council for the duration of employment in the position.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, city ordinances, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the geography and streets of the city.
- Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee must occasionally lift light or heavy objects, use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, be able to distinguish between shades of color, and use the physical force necessary to arrest and restrain persons.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is performed indoors, in a vehicle, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, infectious diseases, and life-threatening situations. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.
