What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at The City of Michigan City?
This position is a Custodian for the Michigan City Police Department, responsible for overall building and grounds maintenance and repair functions.
Duties include:
Cleaning rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, corridors, elevators, stairways, locker rooms and other work areas.
Sanitizing and cleaning restrooms, locking and unlocking doors, and moving furniture and equipment.
Cleaning, dusting, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors by hand or machine, cleans carpet, upholstery, and furniture.
Washing windows, screens, sills, woodwork, doors, desks, walls, and ceilings.
Performing repairs and maintenance of buildings such as patching walls and doors, painting walls and trim, replacing fixtures and partitions, replacing damaged ceiling and floor tiles, and repairing carpet.
Keeping outside premises in orderly condition including mowing and fertilizing grounds, planting and maintaining flower beds, trimming trees, spraying insecticide, collecting, and disposing of waste, and removing snow from sidewalks and entrances.
Setting up and taking down tables and chairs for classes and programs. Cleans and maintains exterior and interior of all police vehicles.
Delivering and returning vehicles contracted for repairs with outside vendors.
Ordering and stocking needed materials and supplies.
Performing other related work as needed or directed.
The Custodian periodically works extended, weekends, and/or evening hours, and occasionally responds to emergencies on 24-hour basis. They will also periodically travel out of town to transport vehicles, but not overnight.
A High School diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and a valid driver’s license is required. One year experience in custodial, building maintenance or general labor.
