What are the responsibilities and job description for the Aquatics - Head Lifeguard position at The City of Middleton?
General Description
Under the direct supervision of the Aquatic Manager and Assistant Manager. The Head Lifeguard, must be completely prepared to safeguard swimmers from drowning or other accidents, rescue and resuscitate drowning victims, administer proper first aid, and secure medical assistance if necessary. The Head Lifeguard will oversee an increased amount of managerial duties as the summer progresses. Expect to lifeguard 20-30 hr/wk and teach swim lessons 10-15hr/wk, leading both.
Job Functions
- Provide all patrons with a safe aquatic environment.
- Administer proper first aid.
- Know, enforce, and adhere to all rules of the pool.
- Know severe weather procedures.
- Be aware of the complete pool area; both the surface of the water (including decks), and the bottom of the pool.
- Remove all objects not conductive to safe swimming.
- Assist with supervision in locker rooms and concession area.
- Be familiar with all emergency procedures, and know your role in emergency.
- Report all accidents and near drowning promptly to the aquatics supervision and fill out accident report.
- Conduct regular inspection of the pool area and park facility for cleanliness and safety. Perform maintenance work as necessary and as scheduled.
- Be helpful, friendly, and cheerful to the public and fellow employees.
- Direct all complaints to the manager on duty.
- Attend staff meetings and in-services.
- Performs other related job duties as required.
- Expected to teach swim lessons. Training will be provided after hire.
- Work with Aquatic Management Team to develop, schedule and run in-services. Provide aquatic staff with necessary information in a timely manner.
- Assist with opening/closing duties of the pool area and maintain appearance of the pool throughout the shift.
- Vacuum & Maintenance of the pool when closed with Aquatic Management Team.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of aquatic safety principles and practices and lifesaving techniques.
- Knowledge of applicable lifesaving training and certification requirements.
- Understanding of applicable emergency medical response training and certification requirements.
- Must be mature enough to recognize and appreciate the vital nature of their responsibilities.
Education, Training and Experience
- 18 years of age or older.
- Current Red Cross Lifeguarding certificate required.
- Current Lifeguard Instructor preferred.
