General Description
City of Middleton Street Crew Members, under direct supervision of the Streets Foreman, perform the many functions necessary for the completion of public works projects. They are the first line operators charged with the key maintenance and improvement City of Middleton public roads and spaces infrastructure. Key responsibilities include snow removal, streetlight repairs, street sweeping and stormwater maintenance, general maintenance activities, and repair and maintenance of roadways.
Street Crew Member work may include skilled and semi-skilled work in the general construction, maintenance, and operation of the City's street and storm sewer systems. This role requires the ability to seamlessly shift between working as a member of a team on some projects and working individually for other tasks. Confidence in direct file maintenance and light and heavy equipment operation is a must.Street Crew Members have frequent interaction with the public and other field maintenance crews including both Parks crews and Utility crews.
This position is:
- FLSA Status: Non Exempt
- Pay Basis: Hourly
- City Salary Grade: 6
- Schedule: Full-time/40 hours per week - may require evening night and weekend hours including overtime
- Non-represented
- Non supervisory
Job Functions
Essential Functions
- Perform a variety of manual labor tasks including patching streets, finishing concrete flatwork, constructing and cleaning gutters, culverts, catch basins, etc.
- Operate equipment of the Public Works department including dump truck, vacuum truck, bucket truck, tractor, end loader, skid steer, forklift, sweeper, paver, roller, chainsaw, etc.
- Perform snow and ice fighting work such as plowing and salting the City streets and parking areas.
- Install traffic control signs and pavement markings on streets and parking areas.
- Maintain and repair street lights and traffic signals.
- Collect leaves, trim trees and chip brush.
- Make minor repairs and adjustments to a variety of street equipment and machines.
- Perform other related job duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in street and storm sewer maintenance and repair.
- Ability to safely operate various pieces of heavy equipment.
- Ability to operate in a highly demanding physical environment for an entire day, to include prolonged periods of standing and frequent bending and lifting of up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to report to work within 30 minutes of notice, such as for plowing or emergency response.
- Ability to maintain reliable and consistent attendance and timeliness.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work well with other employees and the general public.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a “Class A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire date.
Education, Training and Experience
Education
- High School diploma or an equivalent.
- Minimum one year experience in street maintenance or comparable construction work.
