Summary:
Under the supervision of the Collection System Supervisor, this position maintains the wastewater system and performs jetting to ensure quality service. Duties include light maintenance and cleaning of facilities, equipment, and vehicles while adhering to on-site job standards.
Essential Duties:
- Receive instructions, timelines, and staff/equipment allocations from the Wastewater Treatment Plant Collections Supervisor.
- Temporarily assume Job Leader duties as needed, delegating tasks based on individual skills and experience.
- Clean and repair sewers, determine material needs, and use tracing dyes for pipe installation verification.
- Work as part of the crew, performing underground repairs and overseeing complex tasks.
- Monitor conditions using meters to identify hazards, instructing crew members on safety regarding utilities.
- Travel to remote locations using various vehicles, including pickups and dump trucks.
- Collect wastewater samples for laboratory testing.
- Use portable generators and tools regularly.
- Communicate material needs and job assignments using communication devices.
- Respond to and mark MISS DIG requests using a computer.
- Follow department policies to deliver excellent customer service, including inspecting sewer lines in homes when necessary.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations for all job tasks to protect personnel and the public.
- May be assigned to complete Wastewater Treatment Plant tasks if needed. Performs confined space entries as required. Responds to sewer related complaints as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Minimum of one year of progressive experience as an Equipment Operator or Wastewater Worker
- A valid Driver's License and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record throughout employment
- CDL (B) with tanker endorsement
- Grade I Collection System Maintenance Certification available through the Michigan Water Environment Association preferred
- Skill using heavy, medium, and light equipment, including Vactor trucks, sewer jets, and backhoes.
- Skill in using a wide range of hand and power tools employed in maintaining, repairing, and replacing wastewater collection system components.
- Ability to learn computer programs or technical devices the department uses at an operational level.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with employees, City officials, and the public.
Hourly Rate: $24.91 - $30.02 depending on qualifications an excellent benefit package starting on the first day of employment.
