The City of Overland Park has a Criminal Investigator, Part-Time position available in the Police Department.

JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT:

The Criminal Investigator, Part-time is a non-sworn professional staff member who conducts investigations of criminal offenses, gathers evidence, interviews witnesses and suspects, and prepares cases for prosecution. This position requires strong investigative skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to upholding the law. The Criminal Investigator, Part-time will work closely with other criminal justice system personnel and community members.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct thorough investigations of assigned criminal cases, including property crimes, violent crimes, and other offenses.
  • May be assigned to investigate cold cases and other major crimes.
  • Analyze evidence from crime scenes, digital sources, and other relevant locations.
  • Interview witnesses, victims, and suspects to obtain information related to investigations.
  • Prepare and execute subpoenas and other court approved orders.
  • Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and personnel.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of investigations, including reports, evidence logs, and case files using the records management system.
  • Prepare cases for prosecution, including presenting evidence and testimony in court.
  • Stay current on relevant laws, regulations, and investigative techniques.
  • Provide support and information to victims and their families.
  • Write detailed reports.
  • This is a part-time position with flexible hours, typically 20 hours per week. Criminal Investigators must work in-person (no remote or hybrid option is available) at the police department on the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available, mostly during regular business hours, to communicate with supervisors, members of the community, and others with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and department goals.
  • Criminal Investigators must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks, where applicable.


REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION & SPECIAL LICENSE(S)/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • High School education or possession of a GED Certificate. Preference is given with a bachelor’s degree.
  • Education may be substituted for experience, or experience may be substituted for education.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Able to pass a polygraph examination and background investigation.
  • Access to the Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCJIS) is required, so the following KCJIS requirements apply:
    • Must be at least 18 years of age. Must have not been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • NCIC less-than-full access certification is required within 6 months of hire.


EXPERIENCE:

Ten years of law enforcement experience.

Salary Range: Grade F $30.44 - $40.57 Per Hour
