Special Requirements
The person in this position must attain a valid Driver’s License. A high school diploma or its equivalent is required. At least one year of experience plumbing or a related field is required.

Physical work involved with this position includes, but is not limited to, lifting, climbing, and bending and standing.
Work Environment
The Utility Locator works regular hours year-round with occasional overtime and night work when the workload demands it. Manual labor may be required. Working in traffic, confined space and adverse weather conditions are factors in this position. There is no shift work for this position. The person in this position is always on call. 100% of the work for this position is outdoors and requires work done in all types of weather conditions. The position has accountability for safety and legal issues related to work for which this position is responsible. There is exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials on a daily basis. This exposure includes, but is not limited to, sewer gases, bacteria, and viruses. The stress level associated with this position is average.

Purpose of Position
Under the supervision of the Operations Superintendent, the Utility Locator performs unskilled and skilled work in locating the underground utilities of the City of Oxford. The employee in this position locates underground utilities that will primarily include: electric lines, water lines and wastewater lines and any other utilities owned by the City of Oxford. This employee is subject to emergency on-call work as needed.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Supervision Received
The immediate supervisor for this position is the Electric Operations Superintendent.
Supervision Exercised
None (unless directed).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Precise locating, marking, and identifying electric lines and assist with marking storm sewer lines, traffic signal lines, water lines and wastewater lines as needed
Operates locating equipment and pickup truck
May perform tasks requiring manual labor and operation of equipment
Maintains supply of paint, flags, and other supplies for locating
Maintains maps & drawings of underground facilities
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Inspect new construction
Make sure new construction is in accordance with City specifications
Make sure all materials are in accordance with City specifications
Minor vehicle maintenance
Operate water/wastewater equipment as needed
Perform Other Duties as Directed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge:
Knowledge of electric lines
Knowledge of water and wastewater lines
Sewer line construction
Manhole construction
Identification of manholes on which to work
Proper grammar and proper use of English in speaking and writing
OSHA standards and regulations concerning employee safety
Federal and state statutes concerning the work of the department
Mathematical skills, including addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication
General functions and operations of municipal government
Skills and Abilities:
The ability to precisely locate electric, water and wastewater lines and assist with stormwater and electric lines as needed
