Work Environment
- 60% of work is indoors in climate-controlled environment. 40% of work may be outdoors in temperatures ranging from 45 degrees F to 100 degrees F.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Completion of a two-year American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program from a community college, college, or university or two years of previous experience with on the job training
- License certification varies by state

Provide care for sheltered animals by:
- Performing an initial examination of the animal
- Take vital signs, draw blood, and gather medical histories
- Provide emergency first aid
- Collect specimens
- Treat animals with kindness and respect and seek to socialize in order to make them more adoptable
- Maintain a clean and sanitary environment for shelter animals
Supervision Received
The immediate supervisor for this position is the Assistant Director and the Director of the Oxford Animal Resource Center.
Veterinarian Technician Job Responsibilities:
- Provides animal care by determining animal requirements.
- Conducts examinations and diagnostic procedures.
- Feeds and cares for animals.
- Maintains supplies and equipment.
- Maintains records.
- Determines animal requirements by conducting examinations and interviews.
- Completes laboratory tests and studies and diagnostic imaging.
- Takes vital signs and collects samples.
- Administers medications, drugs, and vaccines.
- Bandages and wraps wounds.
- Performs hydrotherapy and physical and inhalation therapies.
- Supports animal examinations by assembling required supplies and instruments.
- Explains animal status to owners.
- Maintains sterile conditions.
- Obtains and verifies medications.
- Maintains safe, secure, healthy, and humane environment verifying shelf life of medications, and complying with legal regulations.
- Enhances service reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- Washes food and water bowls and put them away in an orderly fashion.
- Cleans and maintains kennels and animal living areas on a daily basis.
- Provides each animal with food and water following approved feeding protocols.
- Helps as needed with the check-in of new animals and inspection.
- Follows proper safety measures and procedures when using chemicals and cleaning supplies
- Assists other employees, clients, and volunteers in a cheerful and respectful manner as a representative of the Animal Shelter.
- Helps with washing, drying and folding of laundry.
- Helps maintain a clean and organized warehouse.
