What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS Intern position at The City of Plymouth?
The GIS Intern will assist with gathering and maintaining integrity of GIS data, advance asset management projects and inspect public works and parks and forestry assets under the direction of a public works manager.
Undergraduate student salary range is $18.70 – $21.76/hour, graduate students and those with previous related experience may qualify for a higher starting rate.This position will be posted until filled. First review of applications will be on April 7, 2025.
- Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers in a manner that inspires professionalism, strong communication, team building and alignment with city values.
- Collect asset location data using high accuracy GPS receiver and tablet application.
- Create and edit spatial and non-spatial GIS data sets, perform analysis and data conversion.
- Produce maps, mapbooks, layouts, map templates, and/or web applications in GIS.
- Conduct field asset inspections on public works and parks and forestry assets.
- Perform administrative duties which may include data entry, envelope stuffing, and assisting customers, etc., and any other work as apparent or assigned.
- Currently enrolled in college or have recently completed a bachelor’s degree with a major in GIS, environmental science, water resources, engineering, construction management or a related field.
- A valid Class D driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
- Completed introductory GIS coursework.
- Demonstrated ability to perform in accordance with the City of Plymouth’s CIVIC values (customer focus, integrity, visionary, inclusion and connection) and comfort with supporting and advancing the city council’s strategic priorities.
- Previous experience with GIS software (ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap), GPS data collection, and reading/interpreting as-built plans.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Very Frequent (Often required to perform the job): Reaching (extending hands and arms in any direction), handling objects (grasping, turning), sitting and stationary desk work with neck bent forward, repetitive hand motion. The employee must handle and carry items such as survey equipment, tools and utility castings and must be able to lift object(s) from 0 to 30 pounds and carry object(s) for 0 to 50 feet.
