What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Cadet position at The City of Plymouth?
As part of the Police Cadet program, this position will provide a variety of community service and other municipal services including, but not limited to, follow up on nuisance complaints, animal control, detention cell monitoring, control of recovered property, enforcement of various ordinances, and other community service-oriented tasks that ensure effective and prompt delivery of services.
Police cadets will complete a two-year program with the intention of being hired as a police officer as soon the cadet becomes qualified, and the department has an opening.
This position is 20 hours per week.Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers

Perform follow up on nuisance complaints concerning the general safety and health of the community
- Take nuisance type complaints in person or by telephone
- Advise subjects of complaints on ordinance violations and necessary corrective action
- Follow up to ensure corrective action is taken
- Develop a good working knowledge of the types of cases that need to be referred to other city departments or agencies, and ensures accurate information is provided
- Communicate with city attorney regarding appropriate legal remedies
Handle animal-related complaints within the city, including both domestic and wild animals
- Impound loose, abandoned, vicious or rabid animals
- Dispose of dead carcasses
- Issue citations to violators of city code
- Respond to and handles complaints of animal bites, prepares appropriate reports, ensures proper quarantine procedures, impounds animals when necessary, and ensures proper follow-up inspections are completed
- Respond to and handles all animal complaints, including barking dogs and other public nuisances associated with animals
- Demonstrate an understanding of the various wildlife issues within the city, including handling nuisance or sick/injured animals, working with wildlife rehab programs, and working with other agencies as required
Conduct safety inspections of detention facility as required
- Inspect facility for sanitation and maintenance issues
- Conduct a thorough safety inspection to ensure locks are in working order and no weapons or contraband are present
- Test and ensure the emergency alarm system is in working order
Provide emergency service to protect life and property
- Provide emergency medical service (first aid) at scene of accident/medical situation
- Provide assistance to stranded motorists
- Assist with other assignments as requested, including, but not limited to, traffic details
- Assist persons who are locked out of home or vehicle according to department procedure
Identify physical and safety hazards that affect the community’s well-being
- Investigate and arrange for removal of abandoned vehicles
- Inspect and report public safety hazards (broken water mains, gas mains, power lines, semaphores, construction sites, etc.)
- Enforces fire lane, handicap and other parking laws
Perform administrative and non-patrol activities
- Inspect vehicles for required equipment, etc.
- Maintain equipment/vehicle
- Complete routine paperwork
- Participate in regular department training
- Participate in community engagement activities (station tours, crime prevention, bicycle safety, etc.)
- Deliver city documents to the City Council, Planning Commission, courts or others as requested or assigned
Monitor the release and detention of prisoners
- Assist sworn officers in the booking, release, and holding procedures of prisoners
- Provide humane treatment to incarcerated persons
- Assist with prisoner transporting
- Perform non-criminal fingerprinting when scheduled or requested
Maintain the control and inventory of recovered property
- Document and inventories found and seized property turned over to his/her custody according to department policy
- Search stolen property file and computer files to match recovered property with victims if possible
- Assist in disposal of recovered property according to law and department procedures when necessary
Perform other work as apparent or assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be enrolled in an accredited college law enforcement program
- Must possess valid Class D Driver’s License with a good driving record
- Must have six months experience with computer programs and data entry
- Must have one year of experience in a customer or community service paid or volunteer position
Desired Qualifications
- More than one year experience in a customer or community service paid or volunteer position
- Professional or volunteer experience with domestic or wild animals
