General Description:
The purpose of this class within the organization is to work on a crew performing general labor duties and maintenance for a department. This class works under close supervision according to set procedures.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Requires six months in general labor work or closely related experience. Experience in laboring work, including the use of tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair of streets and water and sewer lines. Prior construction experience is strongly preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
A valid Driver's License is required. Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required, or the ability to obtain at the conclusion of the Introductory Period.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in general maintenance, construction, and repair.
- Knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanized construction and maintenance equipment.
- Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License within six months of employment.
- Ability to understand and carry out specific oral or written instructions.
- Ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills. Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
- Performs unskilled and limited semi-skilled tasks of a physically demanding nature.
- Works as a member of a storm maintenance crew doing such jobs as raking and picking up leaves, breaking pavement, pouring and shoveling asphalt, raking, temping, and smoothing asphalt.
- Digs out holes with manual and automatic digging tools; fills depressions with slag, gravel, or other materials; acts as a road crew worker on construction or repair projects.
- Operates trucks, air compressors, pumps, and related light public works equipment as a necessary part of normal duties; does concrete work; assists in installing signs, markers, benches, etc. Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
