Anticipated Activities And Duties Include:
High school up to college Sophomore: $15 per hour
College Junior or Senior: $18 per hour
Graduate Student: $20 per hour

HUMAN RELATIONS:
OVERALL INTERN REQUIREMENTS:
SUPERVISORY CONTROL: The Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor reviews completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to provide support for department. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of all City operations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, other City personnel, vendors, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None

Anticipated Activities And Duties Include:
- Exposure and interaction with all City departments and operations (including interviews with Department Heads and facility tours).
- Engagement with partner nonprofits and governmental agencies.
- Work with specific departments on specific, short-term projects in order to identify and communicate recommendations.

Job Requirements
HUMAN RELATIONS:
- Update Department Commission and Neighborhood Brochures.
- Update/Create contact information database for community-based and faith-based organizations.
- Log case files for staff.
- Assist staff with updating the department website
- Participate in projects like community engagement surveys.
- Assist in organizing human relations & neighborhood events and youth council community projects.
- Update electronic document storage and filing system.
- Performs administrative tasks such as typing, answering phones / taking detailed messages.
- Assist in a variety of analytical, research and administrative functions.
- Conduct data analysis and identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist Policy Analyst in the review and update of the City Policy glossary.
- Assist Administrative Assistant with organization of employee files and research potential digital solutions.
- Assist Training & Development Specialist in review of LMS and provide an analysis of best practices and possible engagement strategies.
- Collaborate with team members to identify and implement process improvements.
- Take ownership of assigned projects and deliver high-quality work within tight deadlines.
- Uphold company standards for data security and confidentiality.
- Assist with maintenance & installation of traffic signal equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of jobs completed.
- Assist with signs and pavement marking maintenance.
- Assist with stormwater investigations and activities related to the City’s MS4 Stormwater permit.
- Assist with activities associated with the city’s water resources program (water and sewer).
- Assist with surveying, inspections, or other special projects.
- Assist in a variety of analytical, research, of safety and reliability data.
- Assist, support, and aid in the development of evaluation of staff development.
- Research and compile data relevant to statutes, collections, law, available energy efficiency/ improvement grants, and emerging utility technology.
- Conduct data analysis and identify trends, patterns, and opportunities for improvement.
- Generate various reports and identified trends.
- Assist Policy Analyst in developing and implementing data governance policies and procedures.
- Conduct quality control checks to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data.
- Assist the Assistant to the City Manager of Budget & Evaluation with communication and coordination of work sessions with City Council during their review, deliberation, and adoption of the Proposed Annual Operating Budget and approval of the Proposed Five-Year Capital Improvement Program.
- Complete assigned projects tied to the City’s initiatives to promote comprehensive economic development.
- Complete assigned projected to research and evaluation of public policy topics, with specific focus on topics related to proposed or enacted legislation and regulation at the State and Federal levels.
- Assist with the researching of grants and preparing of grant applications to fund upcoming City projects.
- Manage and update internal data sources for financial analysis, cost analysis, and economic analysis.
- Assist with administrative support duties, such as filing, document preparation, writing, and constituent service.
OVERALL INTERN REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: Currently enrolled as a high school junior or senior, in an accredited U.S. college/university, or graduated within the past two years.
- Experience: Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the role, typically gained through an apprenticeship, internship, or relevant coursework.
- Technical Skills: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Outlook.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to follow procedures and maintain accuracy in tasks.
- Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited college Engineering program.
- Preference will be given to students enrolled in Civil or Environmental Engineering.
- Microsoft Office software skills required.
- Use of hand tools.
- Physical dexterity needed.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with an active and consecutive 3-year driving history or the individual must have at least 2 years' driving history and must have successfully completed an 8-hour NC court approved driving course. - Must be actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
- Good organizational and file management skills.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited College or University.
- Active Status as a Student, having completed at least 18 hours of study (as of end of spring 2025 semester) in a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) or Masters of Public Policy (MPP) program with an institution accredited by NASPAA, with physical campus located within 75 miles of the Frederick E. Turnage Administrative Complex (331 S. Franklin St., Rocky Mount, NC).
- Experience with data management, as represented by their utilization of Microsoft Excel.
- Interest in municipal public policy, municipal management, or municipal budgeting.
- Proficiency with administrative support tasks, including writing, transcription, filing, and cataloging.
- Preference given to applicants majoring in Human Resources Management, Organizational Development or related field
