What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adaptive Recreation Summer Camp Aide (Special Needs) position at The City of Tempe Adaptive Recreation?
Experience & Training:
Camp Challenge is a recreational summer day camp for youth 5-21 years old with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities that takes place Mondays - Thursdays, June 9 - July 3 from 8am - 1pm. The goal of the Camp Challenge staff is to provide an enriching recreational experience to enhance the quality of life for the camp participants in a 1:4 staff- to-participant ratio environment. Staff will plan and implement a variety of daily activities for participants, including arts & crafts, interactive games, dance, music, sports, and other activities to encourage and promote socialization, independence, self-esteem, and overall wellness in a fun and safe environment. This is a State of Arizona-approved program through a contract with the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD).
- At least one (1) or more years of experience working with individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in an organized or professional setting, such as organized recreational, educational, childcare, day or related programs.
- Experience working collaboratively with peers implementing activities while also managing safety and well-being of participants.
- Be able to commit to working duration of camp.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
Work Schedule:
- Camp Staff Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 7:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m.
- Camp Set-Up, Training & Orientation: week of June 2 – June 5* (*tentative dates)
- Camp Dates: June 9 – July 3
- Camp Clean-Up: July 7 & 8* (*tentative dates)
Required Licenses/Certifications:
Adaptive Recreation can assist in providing resources to obtain the following:
- Valid CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, or ability to obtain within 30 days.
- Valid Article 9 certification, or ability to obtain certification within 30 days.
- Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card from State of Arizona, or ability to obtain within 30 days.
- Valid driver’s license or state identification card.
Essential Job Functions:
- Work in partnership with other staff in your group and under the guidance of a Group Lead
- Assist in implementation of recreational activities for youth and young adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.
- Ensure and maintain a safe program environment, including appropriate staff-to-participant ratios.
- Enforce appropriate and effective participant rules and discipline procedures; address and redirect behavior issues, as needed.
- Work as a team with other staff to ensure a positive and successful experience for participants.
- Address and tend to personal care needs of students where toileting, diapering and lifting may be required.
- Interact and communicate with other staff, parents and other individuals in a positive and professional manner.
- Maintain facility, report problems, clean up and ensure overall safety of environment.
- Supervise the use, care and maintenance of all supplies and equipment.
- Participate in weekly staff meetings.
- Other related duties as assigned.
